Reviews on Strong Volkswagen

No notice dropped my car off to check battery and charging system, got loaner car to get to hospital appointment on time car was done when I returned. Today was a special occasion but normal scheduled services are the same. Service Department alone will be the reason I but my next car there.

Amy K. | 2015-03-21

Extremely frustrated with Strong VW service department. I made an appointment for 10am, arrived 10 minutes early, they told me it would only be an hour....but they didn't even start on my car until 11:15am. Why even bother making an appointment?

I brought it in to get the 30K mile service and was informed that the free service expired two weeks prior (how in the world was I supposed to know that?), so if I wanted the brake flush which should have been included in the service, I'd have to pay out of pocket.

One bad experience after another at this place. If the maintenance service wasn't free, I would NEVER bring my car here.

J M. | 2015-03-14

Worst experience ever. Bunch of liars and manipulators . First they tell you one thing but give you opposite price of the one they first told you. Adnan was sales person I dealt with beware he would scam you. If you want to use this VW dealership go at your own risk.

JT H. | 2015-03-09

Purchased a 2013 VW Jetta GLI autobahn addition. The process was overall very smooth and the negotiation on the car price was successful. they are willing to negotiate if you're willing to put in the time you can end up getting the price that you want for sure. As long as it's realistic. I have taken my car back a couple times for service and their customer service in the service department is fantastic. I will definitely be coming back to buy another car from these guys.

This review is for new car sales. I test drove a bunch of different cars and finally settled on a GTI. So, Strong won my business by being a nearby VW dealer. However, it was by far the best sales staff out of any of the dealers I visited. They worked out a fair price for the vehicle and I didn't feel like I even had to try to get the fair price. Low pressure and friendly.

Joseph C. | 2015-02-19

The engine literally was falling out of my car and the repair costs were awful.  I was in over my head in negative equity and had no idea how to get rid of it.  Greg and Alan worked with me and helped me find the best option to help me rid myself of my old car and got me into something that would help me get rid of all of the debt the repair costs would have put me in.  There was no fish swimming in a pool of sharks feeling and they were very friendly and helpful and didn't try to pressure me into anything.  The had many good suggestions and in the end we found the best way to rid me of the debt and get me into a brand new car.

Thanks to Strong VW for making my Passat purchase pleasant. They were always professional and never pressured me. They took the time to find the right car and listened to my needs. I recommend them to anyone in the market for a great priced car and positive buying experience.

After seeing the car I wanted to check out on KSL, I called and spoke to friendly individual who advised me they were open until 8 so I could still check it out. I went down and man were they busy! I was able to test drive the vehicle, ask plenty of questions, and was treated with kindness and respect. There was no feeling that I was going to be called 20 times after I saw the car or pressure to BUY NOW!! Fortunately, I went home and slept on the decision. Took myself back there the next day to do a double check, another test drive, and sat down for the negotiations. Tony was so informative about the vehicle and the versatility it would offer - which was exactly what a girl like me needs! He helped me with all of my questions and the time I took to make a decision.

The reason they are getting 5 stars is for a couple of reasons:
1. The car was online at a price on the night I went to see it the first time around. The next day, it was listed significantly higher. When I decided to purchase the car they were extremely reasonable and based the price off of the price it was the day before. It didn't make me feel like they were trying to overprice or get more money out of me which honestly spoke a million words for itself and this dealership.
2. They were helpful, nice, knowledgeable, respectful, and did not make me feel pressured or harassed throughout the process.
3. Tony was personal and didn't feel like that typical car salesman tool. He was laid back, easy going, and treated me like a person.

If we were going to car shop again (which will not be happening any time soon!!!!) we will definitely go here.

Tineke M. | 2014-12-07

Terrible customer service. No follow through from sales staff after you sign. Unavailable management with no resolution for All the issues with the used vehicle they sold me. Extremely disappointing experience working with these scam artists.

Austin G. | 2014-11-15

I had a very positive experience today at Strong VW. Auto, Alan, and Phil all helped me with the purchase of my new car and they were all very informative and approachable. They helped me get the car that I wanted for a great price. I would definitely recommend going here if you are interested in a Volkswagen. I have visited another VW here in the valley and I will say that I had a much more pleasant experience at Strong. Thank you Strong VW!

I have mixed feelings about this place.  Bought my car there and get it serviced there.  Buying the car was fine--I've been through much worse.  I felt like I got a good deal.  The problem is that some people in their service department are very capable and knowledgeable, while others aren't.  My car was supposed to be certified pre-owned, but it had an issue as soon as I got it home.  (This is where some of the incompetence came through--during the servicing process and actually getting the right parts and having them installed correctly.)  Long story short, they did fix it for me, but I really had to stand up for myself to make it happen.  Also, they pressured me into getting the extended warranty, which is kind of a weird pitch because they're basically telling you that your very reliable car is going to break down and need some expensive repairs.  Also, it seems like there is usually a long wait when you bring it in for service, but the service people are generally friendly.  At the end of the day, I'm happy with my car, but I'm not in love with this particular dealership.

Lj J. | 2014-09-04

After visiting 4 different dealerships and getting pressured like crazy we finally went to Strong and worked with Otto. He was amazing. We tested a ton of cars and in the end he got us into a new car at a price in our budget. If your in the market for another car go by Strong VW. I'm sure you'll be happy you did. I know I am!

Mathieu A. | 2014-09-03

I have been bringing my car to Strong's for over a year now and I always leave with a smile on my face. The service staff are extremely friendly, knowledgable, and capable; establishing a fantastic repertoire with their customers. The service area is consistently kept clean and the waiting area is free of clutter and debris. I always recommend Strong for any vw needs. Fantastic service, exceptional staff, and, overall, a stellar company!

Rocky M. | 2014-08-30

Honestly, as a salesperson in the car business myself. I don't know how Andy manages to eat. I went in today to look at a gti, not looking or feeling so hot because my uncle passed away the night before but he wouldn't know because he didn't even go put of his way to ask my name. I do need a car though since I just moved here from California. Anyways I had to walk into the sales office to find someone, and I wasn't even greeted with a hello or a handshake. I wasn't offered a test drive, but apparently I was expected to leave a deposit based off a sticker price quote on a car they didn't have in stock but might be able to get. I guess im the Asshole though. Country club stores ftw. So strong they can't close someone willing to pay above invoice.

Chris S. | 2014-01-16

If you go look at a car take a picture of the price I went in test drove a Jetta wanted to but it I told Carlos crunch numbers call me he never called I had to call him three days later. Then he told me it was 2000 more then the msrp price what a joke. South town VW here I came. Sorry strong I was going to buy it but service was horrible!!!

S B. | 2013-12-30

Matt Strong is the Internet Guru. Looking like a surfing brother from La Jolla, he made my purchase of my TDI Jetta as smooth as it gets. I flew in from Seattle early in the AM...did the deal...hit up the Red Iguana for lunch and road tripped back to Seattle.
Can't leave the credit people out of the props...did their job with out being pushy. First class operation. See you in two years when I need my next TDI and Mexican fix :-)
Cheers! Steve Boz

I'm giving them a one star because there is no zero star option.
There are several reasons that made me decide to never step into this dealership again.
First of all and what angered me the most is that they drove my car without my permission!  Yes I gave them my key for a trade in appraisal, we took the first drive around trip with the salesman, after we got back and the salesman sit us down, he took the key to someone, who drove our car out for a second trip, WITHOUT our permission and not even mentioning it to us AT ALL.  The only reason I knew this is because I saw them took off through their dealer glass wall.  I am seriously unhappy with this action.

Secondly, they were lying about my car value.  I checked kbb trade in value for my car a day before I went in their dealer, it was valued at at least $5000 (and the Subaru dealer we went to before VW offered us $5000).  But what did they say my car was worth?  $2500!! AND they said that it's kbb value.  I have brand new tires on my car, and they said that this already added value to my car.  I can understand dealers trying to make money, but lying about kbb value?  DISGUSTING!
They say that they want to make everything work for us, but I don't see an ounce of honesty in them.

Those two points are only a few of the things that made me hate this dealer.  My friend's experience is even worse.  They wanted my friend to trade in his car, but instead of asking my friend if an trade in appraisal is okay, they told my friend that the car he wanted to see is across the street.  While my friend went to find the car under the hot summer sun, guess what their salesman is doing?  Checking out my friend's car and copying the VIN number.  The best part in the whole thing?  The story about the car  being across the street is a completely trick!  The car isn't even there!  Complete liers!

If you want a decent car buying experience, definitely avoid here!

In reading the reviews it seems people are happy with their sales experience but not so happy with service.

I fall into the "not happy with service" category. Though Strong's VW is closer to me to get service done, I always go out of my way to go to Southtowne. I took my GLI into Strong's and told the tech that my left front wheel bearing was bad. I could hear it and feel it. I'm talented enough with tools that I could have done it myself, but I didn't have the time, so I took it in. They called me a few hours after I dropped it off and told me the car was done. I asked about the wheel bearing and they told me there was nothing wrong with it. I asked them to have another mechanic take it out and assured that anyone with any mechanical skill would confirm that the wheel bearing was bad. I received another call about an hour later telling me it was fine. Well.. I went back and picked it up. I ran down the road to a friend of mine who specializes in Porsche and exotics. I didn't tell him what I assumed was wrong and let him drive it down the road a bit. We went two blocks and he says, "left front wheel bearing is going bad." I ended up taking it to Southtowne again.

I emailed the service manager but never got any kind of a response. I do keep getting mail from them telling me they miss me and want to service my car.

purchased a lease trade in from this place, it was in the shop 7x in one year. After nearly maxing out my credit card in repairs $$$ (my car was even in their shop  for almost 2 weeks because they couldn't diagnose) I gave up. No longer a VW owner due to this experience.

no respect for you time
if you get a used lemon like i did be prepared to drop $$$
if you do settle on VW get every certification/warranty they offer *save yourself the headache

This dealership honestly goes above and beyond in terms of service and attention to detail even after the sale. I sort of have a car buying addiction and as such have sampled many of the areas dealerships from Garff to Dahle to Miller and have actually bought new cars from them all. Recently I decided my drug of choice would be the new Passat TDI and began the hunt for exactly the color and options I wanted. Turned out Strong had it and so I loaded the kids and made the trek to SLC. Long story short, I met my new dealer for life. Andy Carr (I know, ironic right...probably like a porn alias) was the salesman who had the car ready and waiting for me and followed up with honest answers to my questions even if the answer was "I don't know but I can find out". Don Brower (obviously hasn't caught on to the benefits of a spectacular pseudonym yet!) was the sales manager who actually allowed me to take my new car to lunch and even offered to pay for said lunch while I decided if I wanted to buy. They both even spent an hour with me trying to figure out how to set the different remote key to driver settings without complaint! There was no pressure at all and they worked me out an awesome deal on the drug err... car of my dreams. That alone would be impressive but then Diane followed up with great customer service even after the sale when I decided to change my loan rate and she had to redo all those fun contracts for me. Again nary a grumble, they must have nitrous flowing thru the AC. Lastly when I literally forgot to get my free iPad mini for like a month after the sale and they could have easily been Apple Nazis and said, "no mini for you" they instead honored their word, which by the way I had no written proof for, and still gave it to me. In this day, age and economy, who still does that?! They do and because of that I will go nowhere else and would encourage you to as well. I was so inspired I even learned how to post a  review to honor them as you can now see for yourself. It's my first ever review of any kind , may be my only one ever but they are spectacular and I swear I am not related to any of them and will not personally profit from this review at all .

Spodaddyo O. | 2013-04-29

A car dealer that rates a Yelp review? Really?
Yes. These guys went out of their way to make my purchase experience great, from the first encounter in the lot with salesman Andy to the follow-ups.

Plus, it's not too far to the Sears lot for street tacos.

Glenn C. | 2013-04-19

Went to visit this dealership this week, not so impress with their treatment/approach/greeting a customer....seems like the sales person is forced to meet so he can perform his job, not a customer service oriented person imo.  I've bought so many cars over the years and I know where I need to go back and earn my business.  Definitely not going back! Cutrubus treated me nicely and felt welcome.  I agree with Willy L's comment on Strong VW - same here a non-caucasian customer.

Drew S. | 2013-03-22

Bought a car from this location 6 months ago.  Sales experience was alright, but the maintenance/service experience with Strong has been terrible.  Simply trying to setup an appointment was like pulling teeth and they made me feel like they didn't want to make it convenient for me.  I will not be servicing my car at Strong going forward.

Just bought a new 2013 VW Eos from Strong VW.  I am very pleased with the car, sales experience, and dealership in general.
This was the easiest car buying I have ever experienced!  My salesman was Eric G. He was not only friendly (Expected), but really a great communicator too.  He was easy to deal with, offered me deals I was not even aware of, and didn't pressure me at all to complete the sale. Every time I needed to talk with him, he was easy to reach, made a point of calling me back right away if I didn't reach him, handled the paperwork very professionally and was pleasantly professional to deal with.     I shopped several dealers and found the absolutely  lowest price at Strong VW from Eric!!  Thanks !!

JD O. | 2013-01-12

I recently purchased a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI from Strong VW, and the service was great. I live in the Las Vegas area, and worked with Eric and Matt in the internet department after finding the vehicle on . They took a credit card deposit and two days later I flew out to complete the purchase. They were both truly a pleasure to work with and the buying process was very smooth and easy. Shelly in finance was very nice too, and everyone I came in contact with during my short time at the dealership seemed authentic and friendly. Even though they are 450 miles away I would consider buying from then again. They even picked up the cab fare from the airport.

adam b. | 2013-01-07

I've purchased and leased so many cars here I should have written a review years ago. This is, by far, my favorite dealership to work with in Utah.

I have almost a decade of experience with Dave Strong Volkswagen. For years they have taken care of my family's auto needs, and they have done so honestly and professionally. I've become so trusting of the salespeople there (I really like Matt Hansen) that we have done the last few transactions over the phone, before I even drove the vehicles. He knew what I wanted, and he delivered.

When anything does go wrong the service department is prompt and professional.

I'll be doing business with Dave Strong for as long as I am legally allowed to operate a motor vehicle.

William P. | 2012-12-23

Great experience sales person was great and knew his products. Sales manager Shad was professional and worked with my demands.2013 Passat is a great car and Dave Strong VW was great.

Amanda C. | 2012-12-16

No i know that you don't hear this very often but I love this dealership.  Every time I come in I regret that I went to the Sandy VW dealership to purchase my car.

I have started to come here for my maintenance and I am always treated so incredibly well.  My favorite part of coming here for maintenance is that you don't have to have an appointment.  You can just show up before 5 pm and they will take care of you.  From the moment you pull up you are greeted by people who are ready to help.

One thing I have noticed is that for oil changes going to the dealership is cheaper than going any where else.  Having a car that requires synthetic oil most places charge around $100 for the whole thing and they don't even check the oil filter because it is so hard to get to.  Here at the dealership it is $70.00 and they do a through inspection of the whole car.  They were able to get my air filter changed for me while I was there.  They also found some problems with my cv joints that I would not have known had I not come here.

The waiting room is cozy and comfortable instead of stiff and stinky.  They have coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and bottled water to enjoy while you wait.  They even have a keurig machine for quality coffee.

I will never go back to another VW dealership after going to Strong.

We all know that buying a car can be a painful experience. This is a major purchase that we have to live with most days of our lives. Finding a dealership that made this process easier, fair and even enjoyable has been refreshing to me.
I bought two cars this year from Strong, Unfortunately the first one I traded in after realizing that I really wanted a Touareg.
They were incredibly determined to make me a happy satisfied customer though and showed that in many ways. They were patient, letting me take my time to make a decision so it would be the right one. They let me leniently test drive without holding my hand like other dealerships and took the time to answer all my questions and address my concerns. When it came time to do the the deal they were incredibly fair in the price they gave on the Touareg  and  gave me way more than other dealerships would have given me for my trade. They demonstrated that they wanted me to have the right car by being so accommodating and to make little to no money on this second deal. Now I'm happy, have my awesome Touareg and love this amazing vehicle.
Everyone I encountered at the dealership was polite, professional, patient and kind, from my salesperson Greg (who you should ask for), Allen who co assited when Greg couldn't, the sales manager Shad who is just a cool cat and Diane in finance who was very pleasant. The General Manager Mike provides a work environment that fosters these qualities. I'd have to sum it up in saying that Strong Volkswagen just seems to have the attributes of a small town dealership but they are in downtown Salt Lake City. Check em out. I'm glad I did.

Willy L. | 2012-11-10

I 've been to this dealer for many times over years, first time was back in 2006, I was looking for a car with my family, and no one greeted us outside of inside the showroom, not even one "Hello", I do not know if because I am not Caucasian or what. I left without purchasing a car there. In 2007 I took my friend to check out the cars and see if he would like some VW, I got same treatment as before, no greetings and nothing. I helped my self to see see the cars in the showroom and outside at their lots. My friend at the time did not get a VW their either.
in 2010, I took my another friend to see the New Golf. And again, no greeting as normal (I guess for the Strong they don't need to greet their customers?), and we felt like we have to beg for asking a test drive the Car. I don't know maybe we are non-Caucasian and looked young, I never felt welcome there. Of course my friend did not purchase a VW there, we went to BMW Murray and ordered a brand new 128i coupe instead.
Personally if I need to buy a new VW, I would probably go to some other VW dealers even I need to drive 30 min more.

Liberty A. | 2012-10-19

I have to agree with Maria B. I just purchased a 2010 CC from Carlos Lira at Strong VW this week. From our first contact Carlos was the best car salesman I have ever dealt with. They had the exact car I was looking for and from the moment I spoke with him on the phone to the handing over of the keys, Carlos' customer service was excellent and honest. I will definitely use him in the future and refer friends and family to him.

We received an amazing deal and there was no pressure to buy. Which is usually what you feel at a dealership.

Sharon K. | 2012-09-07

I love my 2009 Jetta Sportswagen but I dread calling Strong service.  As they tell me to bring it in (it's out of warranty now) and they will look at it. Today, I explained a problem to the service person on the phone however they don't take the time to ask more questions only to ask when I can bring it in.  I went on the VW chat line, explained my problem, was asked a few more questions and low and behold, the chat line tech fixed my problem. He saved me $50 and time. That was the estimate Strong gave  me as I was told my computer needed resetting.  It was not my problem at all.  I only needed to change a feature setting in the Convenience Mode of the MFD that was reset after my battery was disconnected.
Also I  think but can not prove it but when I went for an oil change, I noticed 2 days later a dent on my passenger side near the headlight.  I am very particular and protective about my car.  I am the one strategizing where to park my car in parking lots to avoid the dings and make everyone walk a distance. So again I am not sure when it happened but I have my suspicions.

Richard S. | 2012-07-07

I'm so torn on what to say here. I like Strong VW better than my other two options in the Valley, I'm a huge VW fan (owned 3 thus far), but its almost like I avoid the service centers at all of them so I can keep living in my "VW is perfect" fantasy world.

I scheduled an appointment for the first slot in the morning 8am. They took down my information quickly, I told them I would be waiting for the car, and they said it would be a top priority. 4.5 hours later my alignment was done. I'm not a mechanic, but I thought I was going to be one in high school and took it for 3 years. An alignment shouldn't take this long. They told me 2 hours in they had to replace a tie-rod as it was stuck and couldn't be adjusted. I get it, no problem, but why'd it take two hours to get to this point. "No problem, it will just be another hour". 2.5 hours later, my car was done.

The price was fair, and I believe they did good work, but when you can't make it go any faster, the ONLY thing left is managing the customer experience. Instead of me having to go and ask how much longer (when my quoted time comes and goes 3 times), come tell me. Offer me a test drive in a new Passat, something. I'd still pick Strong over any other dealer in the valley, but I was let down this time.

Preston C. | 2012-06-27

So I used to have a great review but my most recent experience made me change it a bit. They went a bit over board with pressure tactics and added a few things to the price after we had agreed on two 2014 Passats. I'm a bit frustrated by that as we had spent 5 hours trying to negotiate the price we settled on only to have them change it and spend 3 more hours doing it again. Pretty crazy in my opinion. I don't think I will be going back

Brian T. | 2012-02-02

I purchased my used Jetta from Strong's after looking around at a couple of other dealers and driving some cars off KSL.  The thing I liked was 1) there certified warranty program (which was nice to have on a 2007 that wasn't under the original warranty still) and 2) the sales staff was very nice to me.  I don't like the "big Pressure" approach and these guys seemed cool.  I've been back for oil changes a couple of times since and everyone in the service center has been nice too.  As good as your going to find for a car dealership, I think.

Maria B. | 2012-01-18

Contrary to previous reviews I was very happy with the service at VW. It was the first check-up after I bought my car in Massachusetts. After initial assessment VW figured out they had to order some parts. The manager was very nice and thorough in explaining what needed to be done. He called me a couple of days later to tell me the parts have arrived and we scheduled an appointment. After dropping off my car I got a lift home and then back to the car shop when my car was ready (exactly when I was told it would be). All the repairs were explained to me and the car was super clean when I picked it up. I didn't have problems with it since.

Randal S. | 2011-12-09

They charge an arm and a leg and then some to do work on your VW vehicle.  Then when it comes time to trade in your car, they low-ball you.  I get it, they are a large company dealer with the motive to make money.

I just never felt like I was getting a fair deal.

Also, take notice that the only 5-star ratings under Strong Volkswagen have only rated Strong Volkswagen.

Nate S. | 2011-11-09

I finally get it. Strong VW is an acronym. It stands for
Now that I've decoded it, I believe I'll take my VW anywhere else.

John F. | 2011-06-06

If you like flushing money down the toilet, being lied to repeatedly (then minutes later having that person say ever-so-clever things like, ''I never said that.'')... then this is the place for you!!!

After purchasing a car from these guys, be sure to go down and buy a nail gun.  Place the nail gun on to the top of your foot carefully, squeeze the trigger.  As the nail blisters itself through your skin, bone, tendon and muscle you will get a slight feel-foreshadowing, if you will-of what you will be dealing with every time you bring your new polished German turd back into their lot for overpriced maintenance and faulty design problems.

Ben G. | 2010-09-03

Strong called us every once in a while to let us know that they were still working on our Jetta. Finally, on Wednesday night--exactly three weeks after they received the car--we received a call letting us know the car was ready. The person on the phone explained that they had determined the problem to be a faulty door-lock motor, which they replaced. I'm not convinced they're right about that, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

My girlfriend picked up the car after a very long day at work and didn't think to inspect the car before bringing it home. When we rushed out to dinner later that evening, I found that Strong had damaged the car in several ways: 1) The driver's side visor fell off in my hand when I went to put it down and is now dangling by a wire; 2) there is a large grease stain on the cloth covering the interior roof; 3) the switches for raising and lowering the automatic windows on both the driver's and passenger's-side front seats look like they were set on top of something very hot and have been burned; 4) the lining of the trunk was not installed  properly and is coming away from the frame on both sides.

These are only the problems that were immediately apparent. I will not be surprised if I encounter more.

As a longtime Volkswagon owner and former enthusiast, I would recommend that you have your car serviced elsewhere. And having gone through this experience (did I mention that our master cylinder broke just a year after we purchased the car brand new?), I honestly wouldn't recommend that you purchase a new or used Volkswagon. This will surely be the last VW we ever own. Strong and VW do not care about their customers.
