I have never purchased a vehicle from Carmax, but I frequent their website when we are in the market for new vehicles. I do feel they overprice the cars and the fact that they have a "no haggle price" only makes it worse. I feel like they are still having to pay for their fancy building.
I took a car in for an appraisal and was offered a very low amount for what I thought the car would be worth. There was a check engine light on, so I do understand, but a further test would have revealed no issue other than having the code cleared. All maintenance and repairs were done on the car prior to the appraisal.
The staff was friendly and they were fast. I appreciated the time they took and hopefully at some point maybe we will buy from them.

They have a nice inventory but NO ONE HELPS YOU. I was there for over 1 hour. I looked at and sat in over 30 cars. I saw plenty of sales people. Usually they were playing on their phone or standing and talking to each other.

I am in the market for a car. I had the title to my car and was ready. But their customer service sucked. They lost my business.  I won't be back there. I only gave them 2 stars verses 1 for their selection of cars. Too bad I couldn't buy one.

***Update: I ended up buying a car from the carmax in Live Oak. Much better customer service.***

I would recommend this carmax to anyone looking for a used car. I went to the other carmax on I-10 in San Antonio and left after 1 hour of no one helping me or evening talking to me. But they had a bunch of employees standing around on their phones outside or talking to one another. No one greeted me or even talked to me.

As soon as I walked in the door at this location I was greeted by a man named Kevin who took my name and information.  Within 10 minutes of walking around I received a call from Wes. He met up with me. He was very helpful. He showed me a lot of cars. He was honest and knew his stuff.

I am having a car transferred over from Houston and selling them my car. The rate they are buying my car for is unbeatable. I was so happy with the price they offered me.

Test drove a Ranger. Found over spray under hood. A new front grill and headlights.  Come on, new headlights on a four year old truck!  Obvious collision repairs.  A poor attempt to cover it up too. As soon as I pointed this out, .The sale person attempted to be helpful be helpful and stated that the auto check (alternative to Carfax) was clean.  But, as soon as I pointed out what I found. He immediately acknowledged that I should not accept the truck.

As my wife and I were walking away, he asked if he could find another car. I just looked at him and walked away.  There was no attempt to disclose the damage. They should have known at at one hundred and some checks a brag about. I am a dude that watches my mechanic and does what he does.

THIS IS THE WORSE PLACE IN TOWN TO PURCHASE A VEHICLE!! They let you stay there for SIX hours, pay money down, get insurance AND now THREE WEEKS later get a letter in the mail that they can NOT finance me!!! BS!!! They can have this POS car & shove it!!

Excited sales people, helping me figure out what to buy. Today I am driving my 3rd Carmax vehicle.  No mystery charges.  No one has to go check with a manager about anything. No sales person telling you what you want just because they ordered too many teal with black interiors.

I've  bought a 97 Chevy lumina sedan with 33,000 miles on it and drove it to a salvage yard with 279,000 miles on it.  Also bought  an 03 dodge caravan with 4,600 miles that I still have at 185,000 miles.  My gmc truck has 22,000 miles,   I believe that I purchased each vehicle for about half of the new price.
A $40,000-$50,000 savings!

Consider the first question a new car  dealer asks,
"How much do you want to spend today?"

I took a gamble to write the CEO hoping that someone in this company would care enough to treat me with a degree of respect as I have certainly not received it from the local level here in San Antonio.
My initial experience with Carmax was position, in fact I was gleaming about how great the experience was. That first impression has deteriorated significantly since the day I bought the car.
The sales associate mentioned when I was test driving the car I purchased that the car had a Bluetooth and I thought "oh great"! I bought the car so excited that my experience with Carmax was a positive one.
When I got the car home, I tried programming the Bluetooth and it would not work. I texted the sales associate to ask him about this and he said it should be working. Apparently, when I took the car to the service center they looked at me like I was crazy.
I tried calling to speak with the store Assistant manager Chris and he didn't seem to take my concern seriously, in fact he pretty much accused me of fabricating the story to get something for free. He was confrontational, entitled and did not care about the sale or me as a customer.
After multiple calls to the service center, I received a call from the General Manager pretty much dismissing me and not caring that I was wrongfully promised a Bluetooth from the sales associate.
I then realized that in fact I had a text message from the sales associate acknowledging that I should have had it working corroborating my statement that the management team denied.
What is so sad about this entire situation is that the company made ME feel like I was in the wrong and inconveniencing them for questioning what I was promised.
The branch begrudgingly offered to pay for HALF the cost of one to be installed ONLY after I provided HARD evidence that they were in the wrong. What is so sad about all of this is that I would have been a long term customer and remained loyal for years if they had only treated me with an ounce of respect.
Unfortunately, I rejected their offer as now it is a matter of principal and I have been so offended after being demonized by the management team.

I am admittedly surprised by how easy and enjoyable selling our car here was.
We replaced my husband's 2002 Toyota 4Runner with a new car elsewhere and were looking to rid ourselves of the old gal. She had served us well but was honestly falling apart.

I made an appointment, we showed up & were greeted by Fabio. He was very pleasant and made it very easy. He took about 5 minutes of information from my husband. Then we hung out and drank free coffee for about 30 minutes while they inspected the truck. Fabio came back and said they had an offer for the truck, and it was way higher than we expected! Honestly, I would never have thought we'd get 2k for that old lady but we did! Then we waited in a second area (also with free coffee) while they processed it, then we signed over the papers and got the check.

Overall, we were in and out in almost an hour. I will definitely sell any future castaways here as well.

if you search online for "Texas Annual Vehicle Inspection", Carmax comes up as an option. I called ahead and asked if they did inspections and if I needed an appointment, and they said "yes we do them, no, you do not need an appointment, it is first come first serve".  I pulled up to the service station, and I saw a sign "Authorized Texas Inspection Site" or something to that extent, and an employee approached my car. He was not sure if they did these inspections, but did realize the sign was there. He said he would go ask someone and be back in a few minutes. About 15 minutes later, he still had no returned, so I went inside. I asked the women at the front desk. One was very nice, the other was very rude. After about 10 minutes, they said that "they think someone will be able to help". When asked how long it would take, they said not sure. So I left. I then went to Jiffy Lube on Callaghan and was in and out in 5 minutes with a new inspection sticker on my window. Not one employee knew what appears to be a simple, and most likely, a commonly encountered customer concern. Anyway, won't go back there since employees were unknowledgeable and most of them were rude (except for one).

I had an excellent experience with this team selling my Honda Element. They gave me a LOT more than other estimates from other sites. It took us less than an hour from stepping in the door to getting a check for our car. Trey helped us through the process  from start to finish and was fantastic. Everyone we met there was friendly and courteous. The business staff were efficient and really took care of us. Our experience here was the best we have ever had at a car dealership (seriously - it was easy, quick, and far exceeded our expectations).

I had a very good experience at the Fountainhead Rd Carmax in San Antonio.  I won't speak for the numbers or car types that were involved since every situation is unique.  But for my transaction, which was a trade-in and buy, things went very well.  I have to give a lot of credit to the salesman who handled my transaction, Kevin W.  He has been there over 10 years, has several awards and commendations for his performance, and I can see why.  He is a very knowledgeable, easy-going, and not-pushy, salesman.  To say most car sales professionals could learn a thing or two from Kevin is an understatement.  The San Antonio store is lucky to have him.

I think a lot of low scores are from angry consumers who go to Carmax thinking they will get top dollar for their trade-in, and that the car they are buying will be a new car.  This is not a realistic approach to dealing with a USED car business.  If people are unsure about things before going to Carmax, they should do their own research before, as with anything in life.

As far as used car trading and shopping goes, Carmax has a good process in place.  My score is not five stars but four, mostly because the process does take a while... three to four hours for my trade and buy transaction.  That is not uncommon for any car buying experience though.  Everything else was relatively headache-free.  If you are a smart consumer, or the kind who makes sure to ask questions when anything is unclear, you should be ok at Carmax.  If you are paired with Kevin W, you should do even better.

I do not understand the negative reviews about this company.  If you are wanting to sell your vehicle and do not have the time to sell it as a private seller then this is the place to go.  The process is quick and there is no negotiating or pressure.  You can either take the offer or leave it.  Of course, you could probably sell your vehicle as a private seller for more than what they offer but that's a no brainer.  Surprisingly, the offer they gave me for my 2006 Ford Ranger was exactly what I was hoping to sell it for.  I honestly drove to Carmax with no hope but thought "Hey, what can it hurt?" and was shocked when they offered me exactly what I was wanting to sell as a private seller.  Shockingly, I would definitely recommend Carmax.

Went in to see how much my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 would sell for. It is in excellent shape, lots of extras, no mechanical defects, 22" rims, Pioneer Avic Z130 BT with navagation, built in traffic tuner, 54,000 miles, really in like new condition.
They offered me $5, way.
Went to Gunn Honda on I-10 and they like Carmax looked it over, no hassle, and offered me 10,500.00
About 4 days later had a check in my hand, all paperwork completed.
They are selling my truck right now for 15,999.00 That to me is a fair deal, considering that they are in it for a profit, and still did not gouge me like Carmax wanted to.
How greedy do you have to be?

Went here trying to sell my car because I had to leave the city fairly soon.  I got such a low ball offer it was ridiculous!  Keep in mind that KBB value was $7200.  2005 Honda Civic and they offered $3000!  Luckily through Craigslist, I sold the car for $7000.

I called them to find out how long the process would take and they said half hour is all there is needed to get a quote.  So I decided to go during my lunch break and it took an hour and a half!  It made me so late for my meetings and made me furious on how low their offer was.

Are there suckers who actually sell their vehicle for these low offers???  I would suggest to sell through Craigslist to get fair value rather than going here.

Sold my car to Carmax and the experience honestly could not be improved upon. The only gripe I'd have is that both the appraisal and the final sale of the car took about 10 minutes longer than anticipated, but that's a pretty small complaint.

Everyone was very friendly. The process was REALLY simple.  And the price they gave me for the vehicle was higher than I was expecting. I felt like I was treated more than fairly and also received great service, despite the fact I wasn't buying another car at Carmax.

I would definitely use them again if I was selling a car, and they treated me so well I'd return to buy one, also.

My current car died on the lot of Carmax, I felt I had no choice but to purchase from here.  Upon walking in with trade in mind and cash in hand, I extended my hand out for a formal introduction with the salesman, only to be passed up so the salesman, PHIL (who has been there since 1993) could shake my boyfriend's hand who stood behind me.  That alone did upset me, but I needed a car.
PHIL then asked what I was looking for and I did do my research online, but he pointed me towards other cars and one did catch my fancy with everything I needed and wanted for my family.  They were able to take my car for $300, far more then I thought for a broken vehicle.  Yet, I continue to ask for a test drive of the Sonata I wanted, Phil informed me I had Five days to test drive, which is their return policy.  I did take the vehicle regardless, only to have to break down the next day.  The engine blew completely.  
The internet salesman, Kevin J Walker, works with Phil to bring folks in when inquiring online, he came out to rescue my family and I, plus he contacted a tow truck to return the Sonata back to the lot.  He also set up a loaner vehicle till I could choose a different vehicle.  
I did find one, which was about $400 more and I was informed my monthly payments would go up about $20.  I did not have a problem with this, as Kevin was very kind to me and helping me along as much as he could but could not complete the process because PHIL was my original  salesman.  Well, the next car came in, again Phil did not let me test drive it, he was trying to hurry me along because you know, he works two jobs and this was his day off.  So, he was helping me but really wanted to go home, I did too.  
Phil, begins the process, I signed back both the Sonata and the loaner vehicle so that the new car can be processed for me.  Mind you I am alone, I asked ahead of time if there was ANYTHING I NEEDED TO BRING TO COMPLETE THIS TRANSACTION and was told, "No, you have been very nice to us and we just want to get you on your way." Ok, no problem.  Once the process was started, Phil says there is a small problem, since the principle amount is up about $400 more the first car, I would need an additional $250 to take the car that day.  It was 8:30p, I had been there since 5:30p.  I explained that I didn't have the money on me nor could I get it right this second, but would be more then happy to come back tomorrow and pay the extra amount I was not previously informed about.  So, I would just take the loaner car back and come back tomorrow bright and early.
Since I turned in the loaner car, and I haven't "purchased" a vehicle from CARMAX, I can not get a loaner and well, they were closing, so I either had to get the cash or call for a ride.  What kind of customer service was that, as a woman who was beyond stressed, I couldn't help but cry. And when I did, I was told that sometimes car buying is like that.  This was so horrible, I made many phone calls as they were closing soon and I had to make a choice.  Again, this was PHIL, who had been there since 1993, you would think he would have had to deal with something like this before and could have informed me prior that additional down payment may be needed.  I needed the car, I have a special needs son, so I finally came up with the money from calling family and friends.  They rushed through the paperwork, that information was missing and so they would have to redo it.  I finally got out of there and the next day went to World Car Kia, got a brand new 2013 Kia Soul, with better customer service, excellent warranty, and the Kia was only $1000 more and my monthly payments were only $20 more then CarMax.  My credit is not perfect and I thought CarMax was my only choice vs small car lots, but I used the same down payment amount at World Car Kia and got into a brand new vehicle with similar monthly payments and no pressure!!!!  If you choose World Car, ask for Carlos Mata 210-601-9245, tell him Priscilla Martinez sent you!  Trust me, even if your credit is less then perfect, World Car will work better with you and you will pay the same as CarMax but get into something brand new with way better warranties and car features.

I have only gone once, to get my current vehicle appraised.  I was very pleased with how nice the staff was and the appraisal was as quick as the website promises, at 30min.  There was no pressure to look at cars or buy, and the offer was WAY more than any dealer would ever give me, without the requirement of a trade in to even get the appraisal in the first place.  

Obviously, the price and such will depend on the car you are trying to sell, but based on the customer service and lack of a pressure sales environment, I plan to go look at cars here once I do finally sell my car.  A+ to this place for delivering the service that was promised and not trying to bully me into a sale.

I bought my car here after an accident destroyed the old one.   The service, flexibility and willing to work with my limitations (I live hours away and so my trips were limited) were fantastic.

Very happy with the car and how I was treated.  You pay a premium for a straight-forward, no games, low pressure approach to buying a car but it's totally worth it.
