Reviews on CarMax

Bob A. | 2015-04-01

I sold a vehicle today to Carmax. The transaction was quick and handled very professionally.  I received more than I was offered at other lots including the selling dealership. This is a no frills location,  but I don't need a show.

I do NOT recommend going to Car Max to get your next car. When I walked in, I was not greeted AT ALL. The man in front just over looked me until my parents walked in. Regardless of how young I am, it's professional of the employee to greet anyone that walks in regardless of age. I felt extremely disrespected.

Had an absolutely terrible experience here. I would not recommend purchasing a used car here. It was bad enough having to put up with a non-negotiable overpriced vehicle, but two days after taking it home the service light came out and I heard acceleration noises. I took it to carmax service and they held my car for a week and a half trying to go through the dealership since it was still under the warranty.i don't blame them for the wait time but they were terrible in answering my calls for an update. I called the service department 20x during the day, even tried to reach out by getting the sales area to connect me through, all to no avail. While they lent me a loaner during the wait, it was the most disgusting, literally sticky, and smelly car I've ever had to drive. I had to drive it with all the windows down to breathe. They were kind enough to swap it out for me but the wait time to process the swap was absurd, considering I was probably one of 3 customers waiting for service while they had 10 associates moseying around in the business office. When I finally got my car back, they almost charged me for an inspection charge claiming I asked for one. This just lacks common sense. Why would I want to pay for an inspection charge for a car I JUST purchased from a so called reputable dealership!? They didn't argue with me but again it almost took another hour to remove the charge if I had not spoken up. Being the only person waiting for service after about 20 minutes I went up to the desk to inquire about what was taking so long to remove the charge and I was essentially given a sassy retort to tell me to chill out and that it was with the manager. I held it in but after another 20 I had it with carmax. It didn't help that as soon as I got in the car to leave the service area I heard the acceleration rumbling and after all this time the chemicals faded and I could smell the cigarette smell that they tried to mask. Luckily I was still able to claim the 5 day return policy and so I was able to return my car for a full refund immediately. NEVER again. I ended up purchasing a new car just to avoid the headache.

Last Wednesday I went into this location and purchased my first car from a dealership. Peter helped me and was great! He spent hours with my mom and I looking over cars and letting us test drive multiple vehicles and not once did I ever feel slightly pressured into anything. I was very straight forward with him in what I wanted and what my budget was and I left there with a vehicle that I love!

I was also very honest with him about the cars I didn't like. I test drove a Kia Soul that was absolutely fiiilthy inside. I told him not to let anyone else drove this until they cleaned it again because they would probably leave on the spot. I told him which cars I thought were shit and if they sounded like a dying beast when I started them. He was awesome and would just laugh and try to find other options. Cool dude.

Our trade in quote was substantially higher at this dealership.  Almost three thousand dollars higher.  We bought a new car from a dealer that matched the CarMax price on our trade.  Thanks, CarMax.

Danielle A. | 2015-01-20

I went in there with a specific make and model in mind just seeing if they perhaps had one on the lot, and the man helping me was a total tool. He was quick to tell me that he didn't think that car was "high quality" and that carmax only sells "high quality" cars.. like I should care about his opinion of what's high quality.and when I was about to leave he throws out all these pictures of cars that I had absolutely  no interest in and when I said I wasn't interested,  he implied that perhaps I can't afford a high quality car.. how is this "sales person" even maintaining at a place like this?! Never coming back, just thoroughly  insulted.

I bought a 06 Honda Accord. Great condition everything was fine when I first bought it. Then after a month problems started to come out and their service department fixed them with no problem with their one month warranty. One of the issues was my radiator having a leak, so they replaced it.

Now after 11 months, I found out that they installed a goddamn defective part and I called them thinking they will help me with this problem and maybe even just let me know where they bought the part from so I can exchange it. But no the mechanic at the service was very disrespectful and did not want to help at all.

If you do end up buying a car, then good luck because everything else they do is bullshit.

ALLAN G. | 2014-12-24

Got a call from Carmax manager and he refused to do anything about my car needing a paint job. Said only cars that have frame damage are considered wreck in the eyes of Carmax. Other wrecks don't count, according to Carmax. So for those looking to buy from Carmax DONT!!!

Brooke S. | 2014-12-04

After reading Yelp reviews, I was really unsure of what to expect when visiting CarMax.  I can honestly say that I was pleased with my entire experience.

I made an appointment on a Saturday evening to have my car appraised.  Prior to the appraisal, I did a little research to get an idea of the value of my car.  Of course, I also reminded myself that using CarMax was GREATLY saving me time and dealing with crazies by trying to sell my car on my own.  That alone is worth getting less money for the actual vehicle.

After I scheduled my appointment online, Super Dave (that's what he calls himself!) called me within an hour to confirm my appointment, explain the process, tell me what I needed to bring if I decided to sell my car, and asked if I had any questions.

I arrived for my appointment and couldn't believe the size of the place.  They really do have a huge inventory of vehicles if you are looking for a used car.  I already had purchased a new car, so I was only looking to sell my car.  After a quick appraisal of my vehicle (probably 30 minutes), they had the offer ready for my review.  They offered me the exact price that I expected!  The salesman reminded me again that this is based on the expect appraisal and I had seven days to decide if I wanted to accept the offer.  I didn't need seven days to decide I wanted to get rid of my car, so I accepted and he swiftly walked us down the hall to another department to sign over the title, get the check draft for the vehicle and wrap-up the sale.  I think that took about another 30 minutes.  In about an hour, we were on our way.

If I hadn't been so intent on purchasing a NEW car (I know, stupid), then I would definitely used this place for a used car.  They had cars on display in the store that were 2014 models and with very few miles.  While we were waiting on the appraisal, the salesman showed us some of the cars online and explained that if we were looking for something specific they didn't have onsite, they could bring it in for us (I believe at some sort of cost). The man was definitely interested in this.  We found that some new 2014 models were on sale with less than 10k miles and at a pretty good discounted price in comparison to the new sticker price.

All in all, I was pleased with the process and the service.  I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for an easy way to get rid of a vehicle.

Pretty good experience, especially compared to the typical car dealership. We used the Carmax location between The Woodlands and Houston on I-45. Had an appointment at 9am, test drove several cars, checked financing options, was out the door around 12:30. The price is the price, and they seem to follow KBB fairly closely. So nice not to be pressured. Liked our sales guy (Kyle Manning). He's a smart, nice person who is just doing this until he gets into dental school.  They have a lot of inventory and can get cars from other locations if desired. The back office was efficient, they seemed to get all the paperwork ready in like 15 minutes. I like that they provide a 5-day change your mind clause and a 30-day warranty. No complaints.

Marilyn K. | 2014-11-26

We had a really good experience selling our older car to Carmax.  We got a fair price and we were in and out within about an hour. I would go there again, next time to look for a car.  Nice staff too.

Chandre W. | 2014-10-22

I was sold a car that immediately needed new brakes. After two failed attempts they finally got the repair right. A month after the purchase I needed a new headlight (which I can understand) but was then told by the mechanic that my car had been in an accident before. It's interesting that it was never mentioned on the carfax they were so quick to present. Now here I am 9 months after the car purchase and the breaks are once again grinding. I called and was told they only have a 6 month/3000 mile guarantee on their repairs. They're tactic is to say whatever they can to sell you a car and have you deal with the problems later. I'm getting rid of this car ASAP and will never even consider purchasing from them again.

Shandreka P. | 2014-10-08

We were in dire need of a new car....and my husband found car max online we looked around and found exactly what we wanted for the price we could afford. ...Victor was grate helping us through the process and I just signed... gotta go drive my new car!!!

Erika V. | 2014-09-08

I came in last Thursday to purchase a car. Lawrence the senior sales manager was excellent and manage to get me a great deal on a car and the entire transaction took less than 2 hours which was awesome.

However my customer service experience got even better on Monday when I came back with my car because it has been vandalized over the weekend in Galveston and two of my tires have been slit . They typically don't cover vandalism however I think I look so sad they covered all the damage and didn't charge me a penny. Big thanks to the service manager who just saved my day

Gwen T. | 2014-08-17

We just bought a car yesterday evening, and I want to give a shout-out to Catrina, our sales consultant, and Phaedria, our Business Office Associate. I knew what I wanted when I came in (do your research!). Wanted my son to feel involved in the selection, so when the Honda I wanted hit my e-mail box (set up a Saved Search on the carmax app and it will e-mail you when your car becomes available), I booked a test-drive (yes, you can do that). Catrina e-mailed me the next morning and from then on, she impressed us mightily. The test drive convinced me to go ahead and buy, if the trade-in and financing offers were in line. The rest of the process, though standard CarMax (no-haggle trade-in offer, no-haggle price, no-haggle financing), was just amazing. My son and I were treated like royalty - we truly felt like the only customers in the whole place, though every single sales cubicle was filled that afternoon. Thanks to Catrina and Phaedria, the appraisers, and everyone else behind the scenes, for your professionalism and respect.

Currently I have 3 cars but only 2 drivers at home.  So it is time to stop paying the extra car insurance.  In the past I traded my cars in for new cars.  I only sold one car on my own and that was an unpleasant expierence. With recommendations from various friends and relatives, I made an appointment on line last night to get an appraisal this morning.  I immediately received a call from Carmax to confirm my appointment.  When I walked in this morning, I was immediately greeted by 3 advisons.  My advisor was ready for me and in about 20 minutes, I was presented with a proposal for my car which was good for 7 days.  The proposal was lower than what I could get by selling on my own, but it was perfectly acceptable.  I don't think a car dealership can top the offer.  I can understand the lower price since Carmax needs to do some minor repairs and turn a profit on the resale to stay in business. The waiting area has a TV and very clean. Overall a very comfortable expierence.

Shannon M. | 2014-08-01

Brought my car in for an appraisal, they completely lowballed me. I went to a dealership right after and was offered $1400 more. I'm glad I didn't mention the offer carmax made because they probably would have offered less. Anyhow, if you're selling your car, you should definitely go a few places! 2 stars only because the guy that helped us was nice, but even he looked embarrassed when he presented the offer.

Darren T. | 2014-07-28

Came here to sell a car and got lowballed all to Hell. Went to Car Snappy and got $1500 more. That's about it...

Joe Y. | 2014-05-17

I came to car max after having experiences so bad at two other dealerships as to be almost comical. Jesus greeted me at the door and asked me what I was looking for. Amazingly when I told him the car style and price range, he took me to EXACTLY what I was looking for, not a car that cost 3000-5000 more like the other dealerships. I wanted to trade in my old car as well, so I looked up the blue book value beforehand to get a rough idea of what I could expect. Carmax actually gave me the entire KBBV on it, and I was able to use it as a down payment. Jesus was relaxed, not pushy at all, and was able to beat the financing rate that I had previously been approved for.

I really can't imagine buying a car anywhere else. ASK FOR JESUS, you won't be disappointed.

Kirsten T. | 2014-05-13

Friendly and fast appraisal process for selling them your used car. I did not take the offer however as it was very low given the many hours of research I put into what is fair market value for my used vehicle.

Yue D. | 2014-05-07

This is my first time selling a car, so I've got no comparison, but the experience here was really pleasant.

We just got a brand new car, instead of trading-in my old Camry, we decided to keep it for a little while before I got used to the other car. It turned out alright so we wanted to sell it asap. Both of us know nothing about selling cars personally, so we figure we'll do it the easy way. Though the price might be lower, it can save us tons of trouble.

I used to have a dealer friend told me if I sell it myself my 2005 120,000 miles Camry may still worth $6500-7000 since it's in really good condition, which everyone drove it agreed. And I looked it up on KBB, it said the trade-in price ranged from 4500-6000, I think I can take that. So one Monday, without appointment, I drove to Carmax for an appraisal and planned to sell it if the offer is good. The parking was a little bit confusing, since they have a huge lot, and one third of it was reserved for "service only". So I picked a random spot. Later I learnt that if you're here for appraisal, parking near the entrance will be most convenient for both you and the appraiser.

The place looked nice, and the minute I walked in a sales representative greeted me. When he learnt what I was here for, he told me it'll take probably 45 mins. He found an appraiser for my car, and took me into one of those cubics to explain to me what's gonna happen next. Also he asked me if I'd like to buy any car today. I've always wanted a yellow Beetle, so he helped me browsed the inventory for a while. When we're done he told me I can wait in the lobby, fine by me.

The appraisal took less than 45 mins I think, when he called my name and handed me a packet with the offer. $5000 was actually a little bit lower than my expectation, but acceptable. Without hesitation I decided to sell it. The next step is checkout. After another sales representative took care of the paperwork, I moved my car to the Service area and took all the belonging out. Suddenly a sad feeling hit me, maybe I'm just too sentimental, but selling the car is like saying goodbye to those days and memories...

More paperwork followed, but I'm actually pretty happy, b/c if I'm selling the car on my own, who knows how much time it will take for me to figure out all these paperwork and stuff... The hubby-to-be stopped by during his lunch break to pick me up, and we waiter here for about 10 mins before the paperwork was finally done. We got a copy of all the paperwork and a bank statement. The whole process took about one hour, we felt so relieved and we're happy we chose Carmax.

Just a small tip, browse their website before you go if you're planning to sell, you'll need some ID, title, and other stuff if it's more complicated, and the website has a list of everything you need. Just in case.

Dea A. | 2014-03-15

This the second car I've sold to Carmax. I sold my MINI Cooper here last weekend. They offered me considerably more than what a local Mazda dealer was offering me for trade in. I came in late, 8ish. I left around 9:30pm, bank check in hand. They showed me the times for people how long they waited all day on that day, most were 15-20 minutes. I waited for a solid 45-60 minutes. I suppose that's typical at the end of the day, I'm not sure. They finally gave me the offer at 9:00pm. We ran to the back to make sure they could still take care of me that night -- really appreciated that.

Pro tip for selling your car: get your car professionally cleaned and / or detailed. The shinier better looking you make it, the more money it will get. Make it shine. My dad used to work for Carmax, and told me paying the extra money to get the car really cleaned was worth it. Walk in with title and both keys (if it has both keys).

Overall, a great experience, as usual. Just took longer than it did previously. Also the waiting room was unimpressive.  Sold two cars, will sell them another when it's time.

Kyle K. | 2014-03-06

Sold me a car with two bad sensors. Has been messed up since I got it. Then when I tried to get it fixed they gave me the run around. Will not be buy another car from this or any carmax. The workers do not know what they are doing. 200$ down the drain because your selling messed up cars.

Alexander T. | 2014-03-04

I had a fairly good experience here. With Carmax, since there is no haggle - find the person with the BEST service.

Our family has bought 3-4 cars and traded in likewise - Roy Turner has never failed to miss a phone call in the many years we have worked with him.

I also was not satisfied with my car and used the 5 day return policy to find a different cat in the lot. Overall a good experience, - but beware of the fact that the cars MOVE FAST. You will be looking at a car and it will be sold while you are deliberating, be sure to have them hold it for a while if you are serious about buying.

Monica F. | 2014-02-26

After having a bad experience at Honda of Clear Lake (see review for them LOL), I went over to CarMax to find a car for my son.  Our salesperson, Amberlee, was so sweet and very helpful!  I told her what I wanted to spend and she gave us 2 different options that fit our price range.  While that may not be a lot of options to most people, it was fine for us as we needed to get something quick since my son had just totaled his car 2 days before.

With any car buying experience, the entire process takes a little time (even if paying with cash, as I was), but everyone was so pleasant!  I ended up getting my son a little Nissan for just under $10k.  I like that CarMax does a through inspection of all of their vehicles, even offering a 5 day, no questions asked return policy and a limited 30 day guarantee.  It's reassurance when you're buying a car with a lot of miles (as this one had).

I highly recommend Amberlee and CarMax for your next car purchase!!  No haggle, no hassle!

I went for a long extended interview for a job a Carmax. During the interview they gave me the impression that I would be hired and said they would be in contact with me but they did not contact me whatsoever. At least after all the effort I made, they should have at least sent me a letter or something that I did not qualify. They just left me hanging with no explanation.

Lance H. | 2013-11-19

Came to get the battery replaced on our new  Toyota from Carmax. Did not receive callback after leaving message for service. It took over an hour to test and replace the battery that was under warranty. I even told them I did not have time to wait.

Mike H. | 2013-10-04

I have sold 3 cars to Carmax in the past, and on my most recent visit I was there to get my truck appraised.  My sales consultant was Gloria, and she was awesome!  She was super friendly, and I really enjoyed working with her.  She walked me through everything, and she made my visit a wonderful experience.

I had a number in mind based up Kelly Blue Book, and Carmax offered me considerably more.  I do not know why anyone would ever trade a car in at a dealership; Carmax will always offer you more money.  Carmax is a low pressure, friendly business.  I have absolutely no complaints.  I know I will be back!

Sapient O. | 2013-09-17

Every time you go to use it you will find that this or that is NEVER EVER Covered!

Basically what they will do is replace & never fix always charging you a premium for the replacement part.

Danny L. | 2013-09-07

This place is a joke if you ever want to sell your car here. I was getting my car appraised and was expecting maybe the lowest Kelly Bluebook value (meaning in fair condition, not great or perfect), however Carmax wanted $2000 less than that. I could easily sell it myself for $3000 more for what they offered. If I do a search for my car on craiglists or private dealers, they are selling at least $5000 more than what Carmax offered. Talk about major profit for Carmax!

Other than that, the staff is not too bad and they aren't too persistant. The appraisal process took about 35-40 minutes. I dont think I would ever sell my car to these guys but maybe I might come back and buy a used car here.

Mong Chong E. | 2013-09-05

I went in for an appraisal and while I tried to seek out one recommendation from a previous yelper, he wasn't available so I took my chances. I was greeted/helped by Steve Carroll. I highly recommend him. He was very professional and completely fulfilled all my requests. Granted I told him I was there to get my car appraised and that was it. Either way, I was afraid to go in there and have my car completely low balled. It wasn't. I was highly surprised that my car was appraised for the value they gave me. It was way higher than any dealerships I've contacted (2 others) even with their reputation of appraising at a much lower rate than kbb or edmunds. I was outta there in less than 30 mins.

Seek out this man if you need to find a car. I look like I'm a teenager and wore jeans and a t-shirt but he was not disrespectful in any way. If anything, he made me feel bad that I had no intentions on buying from carmax at all.

Rebecca G. | 2013-08-07

I have shopped at other Carmax's before and have had great experiences, but the salesman we had here (can't remember the name unfortunately) was so terrible I wrote a complaint to the company (when prompted to give  customer satisfaction survey). I was not seeking a response, just thought they should know how their employee was representing the company.

Throughout our consultation and test drives, the salesman interjected his political beliefs, preached about religion and morals, and argued with us about our opinions on the car and other matters.  Much of the first test-drive was spent listening to him rant about how evil Walmart and anyone who shops there is.

I went another time with a friend and specifically requested to NOT have this employee, and though I didn't remember his name, when I started to describe the experience the other employees knew exactly who I was talking about.  If the company is aware of this person's behavior, they should take action to make sure it does not continue instead of letting it go on.  We did not end up buying a car there, and I would not shop there again.

Adam F. | 2013-07-30

I've never purchased from carmax but I have used them to get a competing offer to compare to a trade in at another dealership. They are quick and thorough and have a wide variety of used vehicles if you are in the market. I'd give them a shot before looking to trade in your vehicle. If nothing else you can get a bargaining chip to use at the dealership.

Olivia R. | 2013-07-24

I came here looking to sell my POS car and got a new one. So far, so good! I'm loving my boomin' Escape. I wish I would've thought of this sooner!

Janet C. | 2013-06-12

I took my used car to Carmax to get an appraisal and the process was smooth, easy, and extremely helpful. I didn't end up buying a car there or selling my car to them because I wanted to buy a certified pre-owned Toyota and the Toyota dealer made me an offer including a trade-in that worked for me, but I wanted to write a favorable review for Carmax, anyway. Zee Siddiqi was the Carmax employee who helped me and after seeing how Carmax works and receiving a fair offer, I would never try to sell a car on my own by using something like craigslist - the Carmax way seems much safer and better.

Tiffany G. | 2013-06-10

Went to purchase a new SUV. We knew what we were looking for. We had 2 we wanted to test driving to decide which we liked best. After the 1st test drive our salesman went inside to get a key for the 2nd SUV. After waiting 30 min in the heat just browsing through the cars out there waiting for him to come back, I got tired of waiting and headed back inside. I found him at the entrance and asked if he was coming back out. He said he was next to get a new customer and hed be out soon. I couldnt believe what he told me. I went back outside to find my husband and the guy omes running out telling me he can help us now. We left. We went and purchased an SUV at a different dealership a few hours later.
He lost a sale for him and Carmax.

Chris H. | 2013-05-12

Looked here when were trying to purchase a vehicle. Looks like they are servicing the crowd that goes by what the monthly payment is rather than the apr and total price. We always finance through the credit union and could care less about their financing. Only went once and well never be back. Kind of reminds me of urcarco from long ago. They will finance anyone just don't ask what the rate is.

David N. | 2013-04-01

So I am in search of a NEW car, but I gotta sell/trade my current car first.  One of my friends is in the car biz and told me to go ahead and get my car outside evaluated first before getting the dealership prices for a trade in to see what the variations are.  I first used Kelly Blue Book to get an estimate.

I had seen carmax commercials plenty of times but never really knew what they were all about.  I called in ahead of time and spoke to Ben.  He answered a few basic questions and I was headed there to meet him in person.  He was very helpful by getting my car apprasied and walking me through what carmax was all about.  I must say the car buying experience has changed drastically.  It's not high tough sales but more honest talking through.

The only thing I was unhappy about was their price they offered.  It was quite below what others were offering but they say it's due to the local market.  Their quote is good for 7 days and they ONLY have USED cars, I didn't know that before today.

Andrew E. | 2013-04-01

Offered me $1,000 less than another dealer for my car, and kept referring to the Kelly Blue Book value for justification.

Melody F. | 2013-03-13

Best used car dealership ever! Although they only offered me 3000 for my car! It is a bit worn :). My sales guy was real and nice. I really enjoyed my 45 minutes there while waiting on my appraisal. I would refer car max to anyone! Ask for tony mooney.

My son turned 17 and I think I waited as long as I could to buy him his first car. Lets forget the fact that I drove my mother's 69 Buick LeSabre before I drove her pimped out LTD. After that, my twin brother and I shared a 67 Mustang before going off to college and sharing a brand new Toyota truck in 1983. But I digress. My son was convinced he wanted a truck so we looked long and hard both in person and on internet. With a budget of about $15k, it wasnt going to go as far as we thought it would. That kind of money will buy you a 2005-2008 Toyota Tacoma with about 100k miles on it! Anyway, we decided to walk some of the lots in our area on a Sunday and pickings were once again slim. Either too old with too many miles or too expensive.

While walking the CarMax lot we actually saw a four door sedan that we liked. I called a salesperson on the next day and he said that he would hold long enough to come take a look at it. He stayed in touch but wasnt pushy. He was fine with me texting him to keep in touch and when I told him that I had my own financing, he didnt protest.

He shared openly ( I think its the law ), that the car had being either a fleet or a rental. I didnt car because the car had low mileage, was clean and the price was right. He also shared that the car had a couple of cosmetic repairs due to fender benders and offered to have the used car buyer come out and try to show me where it might have happened.

This was right before the first of the year, yet I never felt the pressure to purchase  before the end of the month like some dealers. I came in once and drove it in the rain. The next time I came, he didn't presume that I was going to buy but had it ready for me to take an extended drive and look. I told him I was ready to buy but that I was going to pass on warranty because of past experience.

I fully expected pressure to upgrade with other options including financing and warranty, but it never came.

Without a doubt, this was the single easiest, no hassle, no pressure car buying experience I have ever had. No sales manager. No F&I guy. No tricks. No lies. Just straight up service and information when I asked for it.

Anthony B.'s review is certainly more comprehensive as it relates to what you can expect from Car Max in terms of the way they do business, but I really just wanted to share my great experience. I highly recommend Eric Thomas as a sales consultant.

They jack the prices up by 2 or 3 grand , and then tell you that you're getting a great deal.

Skylar G. | 2012-08-13

One, the man who greeted me at the door was awful and rude. I didn't need much, I just needed a value on my car for insurance. Another man cam up to me who was a buyer, and he was even more rude. They treated me like crap, and like I was stupid. Another thing, is everyone (Customer wise) seemed incapable  of speaking proper English, and were just as rude as the people working there. I never plan on going back, whether is is buying or selling a car. I do not recommend them for anyone for any reason. Whether you just need a piece of paper to give to your insurance, or if you are selling/buying a car. Worst place I have ever been too.

We have bought several cars from Carmax over the past 14 years, all but one at this location. We have never had a bad experience. In fact, shopping there has become like visiting an old friend. I love the no-haggle experience - car shopping with no pressure? Sign me up! We always research our purchases on the website before going in and know exactly what we're looking for. Every salesperson we've ever dealt with has been professional and knowledgeable, and the business office has the process down to a science. Since we've bought Hyundais the last few times, we haven't purchased the MaxCare warranty, but have had it on other cars, and dealing with the service department was an equally good experience. I highly recommend Carmax whenever asked my opinion, and I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks they hate car shopping.

I loved the Toyota Corolla that I bought from Carmax, that is until I was almost arrested because of what the previous owner had been doing with the car. About a month after buying the car, I was stopped at Border Control and told that they detected the residue of illegal substances in the trunk. Apparently Carmax needs to clean their cars better or do a background check on the previous owners of the cars.

I scored a 2011 Kia Soul here, and love the car. Not only did they have the best selection, they didn't rush me through the buying process like other dealerships. Delia Garcia was a delight to work with, and they have financing for all types of credit.

The only hitch was that only 1 of the two key fobs is usable so I'm having to get the 2nd one made. That process could take a whole week, but I'm glad they're able to do it at no extra cost.

Compared to the other dealerships I've dealt with, they take the anxiety and guesswork out of car-buying. The financing and sale all happens at the same time, so you don't need to worry about getting screwed on the back-end once you decide on the vehicle and agree to their up-front cost.

What you will need to bring:

-3 credit references
-2 paystubs
-Insurance carrier info
-Downpayment of at least 2x your first payment

Look.  I am not a fan of big beastie cars... and big boasty salesmen.

So... I went here, and got a little beetle car...  from a little bestie salesman.

Fred Z.  My new bestie.  This is the guy to talk to!  I am so in love... (he reminds me of my Dad, who I lost three years ago)  I miss him already and I only got the car a week ago!  Maybe he will go to lunch with me...  I'm gonna call and ask!

There's a big playroom for midgets.. and immature adults, they act like you're there to buy a Maserati... when you're looking at Minis.

Incredible service, incredible sales person.... and my midget loves the car!

I recently purchased a 2008 Toyota Prius from this location.  The commercial is True, "the way car buying Should be..."  The salespeople/staff who helped me out, Lawrence, Mark and Erika were wonderful.

This is 6th transaction with CarMax and I'm happy Again with the service, attention and ease of it All were what keeps me going back to CarMax.

I highly recommend.

I used to work here, so this may be a biased review. However, I have to say that this place is really good. Trust me when I say that this is the best place to get a used car (they don't sell new ones). No "lemons," no haggling need (even though bargaining is so fun), no worries. Seriously. If you go somewhere else, you will always have to worry about "Did I really get my money's worth?" or "Could I have haggled even lower?" Sure, they are a little higher than the rest. You know it's worth it. If you want to sell your car, I'd really consider the condition. Be honest with yourself, so that you're not surprised at the price you are offered for your vehicle. Now, back to buying.

People. I'm putting this on it's own paragraph, because it is that important. IF YOU BUY A CAR FROM CARMAX, GET THE MAX CARE WARRANTY. It's more worth it than you think.

Just give these guys (or ladies) a try and don't go in with your guard up. They run on a no commission basis, so they're not going to sell you a car you don't want. I just walked out with a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt with a few miles over 38,000 for $12,998. I've never been happier and everyone has been complimenting me on the purchase. When it comes to financing, read what I said earlier about your guard. They are better at financing me than any credit union or bank I went to. Stupid Kelley Blue Book prices. They work directly with Bank of America, Capital One, Wells Fargo, and their own finance company. Not to mention if you have really bad credit, they have a company called Drive Financial. Again, really great place to buy a vehicle.

I am a professional Purchasing Agent and I would never buy a car from CarMax.

David R. | 2011-08-16

Have taken 3 cars here in the last 2 years but haven't sold any to them as the dealers have always beaten their offers. I din't like the place, for a car dealership, it just looks dirty. I know it's used cars, but I have seen what they offer for your car and what they sell it for. They make plenty of money to have a semidecent joint. Waiting area is pretty crappy.

I have always gone there to compare it to whatever offer the dealers would give me, but at this point, it is not worth my time...

Heidi S. | 2011-08-15

Okay..I have never been to a Carmax as long as they have been opened!

I went in with a print out of what I wanted to test drive, 2010 Ford Escape!

I met with Chris when I walked in and he was very helpful and nice.  Since you cannot haggle, they do their best to sell that car to you.

I felt comfortable and not pressured really at all.

Avery R. | 2011-07-08

Excellent customer journey. They have the process down right.

Angel P. | 2011-06-03

Initial impression: I'd never dealt with Carmax before, but had it highly recommended by friends and co-workers.  Their website is easy to navigate and I was able to find the cars I was interested in without having to leave the comfort of home.

Experience:  Once I decided on a handful of cars, I contacted a Carmax rep to discuss financing.  There were a few misunderstandings over the phone, but the rep we met in-person cleared everything up so we knew exactly what we were looking at.

There was zero pressure to buy and no trying to "up-sell" us on anything.  Our rep worked hard to get us the financing we wanted at a rate we could afford.

Negatives:  My only negative is that our rep kept calling me 2-3 times a day in the middle of my work hours, trying to get some paperwork.  I finally had to get my husband to call her to get her to stop calling.

My husband and I had planned to sell my BMW before moving from Houston and were dreading the hassle.  We did some research and decided to try Carmax before going to the BMW dealerships.  It took less than an hour from walking in the door to driving away (in my husband's car) with a bank draft that wildly exceeded our expectations.  Erika, who assisted us, has great interpersonal skills.  She explained the entire process to us and answered all our questions.  We were impressed by the way everyone dealt with us.  Everything seemed very fair and above board.  No haggling, no nickle and diming, no sleaze.  I highly recommend Carmax to anyone who wants to sell a car.

If you want to maximize the cash on selling a car without the hassle of selling it yourself, Carmax is the way to go. The showroom is clean and well thought out and the whole process is seamless. You are greeted immediately upon entering and an employee then walks out to your car and after taking the keys and discussing the details directs you to wait in the showroom. They have TVs and free coffee, or you can wander around and have a nosy at cars for sale. It took about 30 mins for them to offer us a very fair price and present us with a written offer good for one week. This is extremely useful when discussing trade in value with various dealers. As it happened the offer from Carmax was much higher than the dealers and we went back a few days later to sell the car. Again, the procedure is well thought out and we were seen very quickly and issued a check. Well done Carmax, it is so refreshing to have a haggle free experience that is also very fair.

I've been here 3 times and every time I feel dirty.

Jimmy W. | 2010-10-31

who knew selling a car could be so seamless and painless? came here on a weekday night, greeted by a friendly salesperson, got my car appraised in less than 40 mins and received a solid offer (higher than what i was offered by a few dealers) minutes later.  the waiting area is very clean and spacious, with tv's and vending machines, and internet terminals.  carmax gives you 7 days to consider and offer, i came back a few days later and got a check in less than 30 minutes.  the whole process from beginning to end was smooth and i was surprised selling a car could be so easy.  very friendly salespeople, the appraisers were very professional and thorough, i highly recommend taking your car here if you are considering selling your car.

Prompt service, helpful employees...that's already a lot better than most car service places.

I walked in around 10:15 on a Friday morning (they open at 10) and was in and out within the hour. The guy who helped me was really nice and helpful. They also gave me a decent price - not the best, but still a lot better than a lot of other places. This place is huge too!

Anthony B. | 2009-11-20

Carmax has a great formula executed well. If you want a used vehicle, and don't know a lot about buying one or just don't want to figure out what new car dealer won't bend you over, it's a great way to go.

If you sell a car, they will do a detailed inspection and make you an offer. Bear in mind that their offer will be made as if they were going to sell it up front., and so any detail that merits a price decrease will get one. If you sell a car on your own, you will get a better price. It's all whether the hassle factor has a dollar value to you that pushes you to Carmax or not.

The cars they select for sale get another inspection and cleaning. They are the cream of the crop, and so they will charge the highest price in the range for that model. Again, if it is worth it to you to get this, then you are at the right place. Bear in mind that the 30 day warranty is likely useless, anything that's going to go wrong has been fixed, or the car was wholesaled and you won't see it, or the defective item will go in 31+ days from now. That being said, the brake warning light came on 3 days after my purchase, and Carmax arranged for warranty repair from the manufacturer and repaired the rest on their own.

The after market warranties are expensive and a waste of money. You can reduce your odds by focusing on cars that have a good reliability record as found in Consumer Reports.

They used to bring cars from anywhere if you were looking for a certain model and some other store had it, and if you bought it there was no charge. Outside of local stores, they now charge a pricey transportation charge which isn't waived if you buy the car.

Bear in mind that cars are complicated machines, so just because Carmax is a slick operation doesn't mean you should buy blindly. Order a Carfax report, inspect the car thoroughly and have a reputable mechanic you know inspect it first. The first car of the type they showed me was revealed by Carfax to have been in an accident, even though they claim to not sell cars that have been in any accident.

While my deez keep spinnin' and these hoes keep grinnin' I'll be
(Rollin in my six-fo')    With everybody sayin'
Swing down, sweet chariot stop and, let me ride
Hell yeah!

Why buy new when you can go to a place like CarMax, get more for your trade in and not have to deal with vultures chasing you like prey all over a car lot. I've gotten my last three cars from CarMax...and no, not because they were crap (well, except for the Saturn...I blame that on Mom), but because the process is no hassle.

When I'm ready to buy a car, or make any large purchase I do my research ahead of time and therefore go in knowing what I want and how much I'm willing to pay. Even though you cannot haggle over the price, you are still gonna get a great deal.

This time I decided to downsize from my Ford Explorer 4x4 to a Nissan Maxima and I couldn't be happier. I thought I would miss my truck and maybe I will on the days I make trips to Lowe's for stuff for the house, but I surely don't miss it when I'm jamming on my Bose stereo and going from 0 to 60 in less than 5 seconds.

All in all, I got way more than I had expected on my trade in, a refund on my remaining warranty and a phat ride with better gas mileage.

So...anyone wanna ride?

Not the best prices paid for vehicle in the world but Carmax does serve a purpose. Today I went to a funeral for a friend. Knowing that I collect cars (I am on number 416 - see ) - the family asked me to sell their loved ones cars. I suggested that they sell them to Carmax. Knowing they were low on money, they asked if I would take the car and and another family member that had the right to sell the car to Carmax for an appraisal and sale.

We did and Carmax bid the car within 2 hours and gave the family an offer for the car. They now had the option of selling them the car or putting in the paper at a price higher than that. The Carmax employee suggested they sell the car on their own or have someone sell it for them. I had explained that Carmax would offer a low amount that compared to what the car would be worth to a private party. In this case - I offered more than Carmax, and purchased the more expensive car - Carmax validated that my offer was indeed a good offer for both the family and for me if they just wanted to sell immediately. Carmax told the family how to sell me the car - we went to the bank and I purchased the car. The less expensive car was sold to Carmax and I thought they treated the family with dignity and did not try to profit by the sale. I offered a higher price for their other car and this made everyone happy. It was a pleasure to see a business support a family in need.

I bought my last car from Carmax. Since I wanted an SUV with lots of features but didn't want to spend $35 grand I choose used. I got to shop and view the cars online, compare them once I settled on 2 or 3. And then email the car dealer by my house for a free transfer from another Houston location. They called me when it was ready and after 1 hour (not many hourS). I also got the warranty since my last car DIED on me, and Carmax has repaired the 2 minor problems I've had since owning it. Plus, they do free appriasals if you wanna sell!
