I would give no stars.  They said they would hold my car and they sold it to someone else.

Update: I may give them a chance to redeem themselves.   I hope they can.  Ill let you know.

I had a great experience at CarMax if you need a car at a fair price and don't feel like dealing with sleazy sales men, which as a girl I think is super important, come to CarMax and ask for Manolo! He was super helpful and understanding. I didn't end up buying my car from them strictly Bc the didn't have the inventory but I would highly recommend them to any friends.

I bought my 2008 Hyundai Elantra from Car Max South in 2009.  I have the extended warranty so I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but whenever I take it to them for an oil change which is all its ever needed besides tires and belts, they are reliable and quick and don't try to make to get extra unnecessary stuff like drive in lube places do.  

Oil change costs $34.00.

The Car Max concept was something that was pretty new to me, having sold former cars privately after keeping them until they could no longer run.

I wanted to create a comparative analysis of how much Kelly Blue Book would recommend I sell my SUV for, what they were going for privately, and how much the dealership would give me. Based on the Blue Book value:

Private sale came in first, with a 10% differential from the car's value.
Dealership came in second, with a 15% differential.
Car Max came in last, with 20% (about $4,000) differential.

The young lady who scheduled my appointment, met me on time, provided information while my car was valued, and generally gave me the options that existed . She was VERY nice, and I chatter her up around the common ground we had. While impressed with her natural, conversational attitude, she dressed "down" and had too-casual body language (sitting on her foot, carrying herself more as if at a picnic than during a business transaction). Some people would not mind this demeanor, and I did not either, so I am just extrapolating the facts. We must keep #1 point in mind: This is business, and it comes down to money. Their offer for my car was just too low.

I think that if I wanted a no-fuss, no bother trade in for a used car, this relationship could have fared better for Car Max. However, I wanted a new car, so the deal could not work out.

We decided one morning to clean our little Honda Fit up and just drive down and see if we could get something bigger for our family to put around in.

We were told by a friend of my husbands to ask for Pete Ramirez.  He was great!  Pretty much told us the cars sell themselves and he doesn't really have to work very hard at all.  

We ended up trading in our 2009 Honda Fit in for a 2007 Honda Pilot.  We've had the pilot for about 3 months and I LOVE IT!  Everything I wanted I now have.  Expecially a sun roof, which I use everyday!

The only thing that kind of made me mad about the whole experience was after we signed away all the paperwork for the car we were told to go wait in the waiting room and they would clean out the car and come get us in about 20mins.  We waited about 45 mins and finally someone came and told us the girl had gone to lunch and forgot we were waiting!  Oh well, at least we got our car!

Pete Ramirez is great and I would definitely send others to him!

I have to tell you that before I came to Car Max... I had experienced what can be best described as complete emotional trauma from other dealerships in Austin. I was made to feel like I wasn't good enough to purchase a vehicle. After speaking with a Car Max associate and experiencing the painless finance questionnaire!! I was approved and was able to come in to the dealership with my head held high, knowing that it was possible for me to leave with a vehicle!! My salesperson Barrah, was the most kind, natural and knowledgeable person I have dealt with in regards to my car buying experiences. It was just soooo easy..the whole process!!! I will definitely be purchasing my next vehicle from Car Max and have already recommended Car Max to my family and friends!! Thanks you Car Max for making my car buying experience a pleasant one!! I WILL BE BACK!!!

Had a fine experience at Car Max.  After having my car sit for a long time, I finally decided to take it to Car Max, mainly because of the convenience.

It all went very smoothly. There were few customers when I was there, so I got service right away. i told them what I wanted and did not get pressured to buy a car at all.

I had to sit and chat with a guy for awhile, but he was an older guy, full of good stories.  We were able to check the progress of the assessment of my car and by clicking a few buttons on his computer, he was able to answer many questions right then and there.

Although the left hand (intake) and the right hand (business office) did not seem to know what the other was doing, they knew their own job well.

My title was ripped, so I could not complete the sale, but I was able to leave my car there a few nights so I could go to TX DOT (Note: if you need a replacement title, you HAVE to go to the place on Parmer) and get a replacement.

I walked in after a few days and a woman, way in the back, recognized me immediately.

Processing took a few minutes. When she was done, she walked me through the process and what I had to sign.

I was happy with my experience and I'm glad to be done. Yeah, maybe a crazy Craigslist buyer may have paid more, but the job's done. And I have a new spot in my garage.
