Reviews on CarMax

This was my first purchase from CarMax.  It was the best car buying experience I have had in 20 years of buying cars.   They had my information ahead of time because i had a car shipped to Knoxville, but I was in and out of there in an hour.  Most of the time it takes 4 hours to buy a car.  The no haggle pricing was right in line with Kelley Blue Book, Which is a little higher than NADA, but still well within reason. Highly recommended.

Have bought 3 cars from CarMax Knoxville. A good experience each time. Trade-in value has always too low for me, so I have not done a trade in. Their delivery detail department needs some serious training. I can do a better detail job myself. But overall, good experience, courteous staff, straightforward pricing, and painless paperwork.

Horrible experience from initial contact to final "detail" of the vehicle. I was given three different dates of arrival for my transferred vehicle without follow up when the dates changed. Additionally, I was told my vehicle would be washed and cleaned out before the purchase. It had not even gotten wet when I was given the keys to take it home. I had to make another trip to the dealer to have the cleaning done. Multiple service associates announced that they didn't have me on the books when I arrived for the detail appointment. Disorganized, unmotivated, and unengaged staff at the Knoxville location.

Have been looking for a car and finally found one. I like that CarMax doesn't haggle for pricing. They make it easy.

Found the exact truck I have been looking for at a CarMax in KY. They transferred it for free and I purchased after initial inspection. I took it to a third party for inspection, all checked out except for the rust on the undercarriage that I missed. After several opinions, I finally decided to return it 3 days later. It was absolutely painless, and I was done in 15 minutes.  They just wanted to know why, but didn't try and pressure me into something else. I will be back, this whole car buying/return process was a great experience. Now I just have to try and find another truck...hopefully from CarMax.

I've had a good overall experience with my dealings with carmax. Large selection of vehicles under 8k miles which is what I was looking for. I wouldn't trade your vehicle because they will lowball you to death! Overall pretty painless and friendly service

Carmax is a horrible company. They rip people off by charging retail price for vehicles for which they paid wholesale. They will tell you that their "inspection" is very valuable. I worked there for five years, and the inspection is an oil change and a quick exam of the vehicle. It is NOT worth the thousands they charge for it. Many of their vehicles are dirty and disheveled. Many times, there will be mechanical problems (unless you get lucky). They will push their warranty "Maxcare". However, it is a horrible ripoff and the service dept will often try to find loopholes to avoid covering repairs. You could have the warranty and still get stuck with a large repair bill.

You would be better off finding a vehicle online and having your own trusted mechanic inspect it. You can change the oil yourself and save lots of $$$. Or buy brand new.

Carmax spends lots and lots of money in marketing and advertising to promote and create a user-friendly, casual image. This is just a facade. Skip Carmax and go elsewhere.

Because my '95 Jeep needed over $1500 hundred dollars in repairs and I didn't have that kind of money, I needed a new car quick, especially living in Knoxville where it's almost impossible to get around on public transportation. I have never bought a car from a dealer, so I didn't know what to expect. I did all the pre-qualifying on their website and within minutes I got a call from the sales-person saying "Come down and pick out a car." I received a lot more money on my  '95 Jeep Cherokee Sport trade-in than I thought I would. That helped me tremendously with the down payment. And because I was really broke, my sales-person, Paul Rutter, also took a post-dated check!  I test drove a couple of cars and I never felt pressure at all to buy. It was so great to get a more fuel efficient car with power locks/windows (my Jeep didn't have those luxuries). I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to buy an automobile.
