We just got our car from Carmax. Given that our credit is not great, we got a little better financing from them. That's the ONLY reason we bought there. Otherwise, we asked to get the car cleaned out before we took it home and he said that it had been "mommied up" during the lease. OFFENSIVE, sexist remark. Plus, then after 15 minutes they claimed it was clean but it was FILTHY inside. The cup holders and all the interior was not clean or wiped down at all. Gross. We gave up and left. Not going back.

Decent car buying experience back in Sept 2013.  I paid more for my '06 Sonata than what it was actually worth, but at the time didn't mind because I don't like the haggling part and just wanted an overall easy experience (fair trade off, in my opinion).

Two major gripes:

1. They only let you test drive on one slow side road-- you really need to drive a car on the highway, over a bumpy road, etc to get an idea for how it feels.

2.  The salesman (whom I won't name here, although I definitely remember him) was real pushy with the carmax warranty-- which was fine until he started patronizing me to get me to reconsider.  As soon as I said No to the plan, he started calling "kid" and telling me I didn't know about car maintenance, that once I owned more cars in my life I would "finally understand" the value of the warranty.

I look younger than I actually am, but at this point he knew my age, salary, and bank account contents-- it's not like mommy and daddy were co-signing for me or funding the down payment.  He knew I was a self-sufficient adult and had no business taking cheap shots at my age.  I obviously did not buy the warranty.

Overall, I feel like the sales guy took low blows in an effort to increase the final sale price.  I won't be coming back.

Jim Buttery from the Indy Carmax was very helpful in getting a vehicle transferred from Illinois. The transfer took just under 2 weeks and it was ready for me to test drive the day it arrived. We inspected vehicle, test drove, closed the deal AND traded in a vehicle in about 2 hours. Thanks to Jim and the Carmax team for making this such a great experience!

We found the perfect car with the help of our CarMax Salesman, Nathan Washington.  After putting a hold on it, securing our financing, and taking the night to think it over, we returned with our out-of-town parents to give the "go ahead" (we're, admittedly, very car-dumb ourselves).  Upon arriving, Nate let us know that "someone deleted his hold" and others were looking at the car.  Those "others" ended up purchasing it while we were waiting (we literally saw them buy the car while we waited).

Long story short: Our experience was terrible.  It was an utter waste of time that led to us hating CarMax, the car superstore that our friends and family had pushed us toward.  The only offers to "make it right" involved finding another car on the lot (we already shopped the lot the previous day and thought we had found that vehicle) or bringing in a similar car from another lot.  These are standard practices they would do for any client and did nothing to help the situation.  Honestly, though, our trust in CarMax was already lost at that point.  I'm not entirely sure what they could have offered to satisfactorily fix other than working with us on price of a similar vehicle, something that was outright denied.

It is very likely that our experience is solitary and/or that other CarMax stores are fantastic.  If you are going to try out Indianapolis CarMax, though, I would do so with large amounts of caution.

Friendly and quick on a Saturday afternoon.  We swung by to get an appraisal on a car I needed to sell.  They had it done in under 30 minutes from the time I walked in the door.  It was a strong offer, but I ended up getting a little more private party.  They even had a play room for the kiddo's to hang out.  No complaints.

I wouldn't recommend selling your car to them, if they tell you they will have to resell it at an auction. If I were you I would take my chances somewhere else.  I sold them a car and was informed that due to the condition of the car they would have to sell it at an auction. I thought ok.  Well come to find out a month later that the car was sold at an auction however the car was still in my name when it was sold. So the new owners drove around in the car with the car still registered at the license branch in my name.  Carmax didn't have the car changed and registered to them before selling the car.   I thought since I was dealing with a business that this kind of situation wouldn't occur, well I was wrong.  Carmax has still yet to get this matter resolved even though numerous calls have been made to them.

I sold my car to Carmax-I am not in the market for a new one right now. I didn't want to go the route of trying to sell it myself-makes me a bit nervous. So I walked in there, and they did all the work! All I did was wait. It was a pretty amazing experience. And I had done my research online, so knew approximately what my car was worth. They offered me more than I even thought I would get. Everyone was very professional. Great experience.

Great service. Friendly helpful staff. I sold my car. It was painless and quick. The price was fair. Do you like to haggle and wait for the sales rep to "talk to the manager". If yes, this place is not for you.

I was very happy with buying my car from CarMax. But John Grey went out his way to make my experience awesome. He keep me in the loop on everything that was going on, was personable, professional and prompt. Just a note, bring two pieces of docs that you live in the state. I just happen to have two bills on me. I was very happy buying my car from here and plan to buy from Carmax in the future.

There is no wiggle room in the price.None. But I did not mind that.

I think Carmax is a great service. Firs, you can do it all here. If you aren't the kind of person who likes to 'haggle' -- and let the salesperson say " let me ask my manager" about the price you offer, this place is a breath of fresh air.
To be frank, I'm lazy. The thought of selling my car to a private party and having to answer questions, schedule missed appointments, blah blah blah, just makes me want to crawl in bed and stay there. Carmax gave me about $500 less than KBB said I could get for a trade in. I thought that was decent. The price of the car I purchased was also slightly under what KBB said it was worth.
They dealt with my extremely obnoxious toddler through the whole process. I went to Jeri & she was super nice and accommodating.
Definitely check it out.

The Good:
You get a 30 day warranty with your purchase.  I suggest you take your new used car to your favorite mechanic and they can give you a list of things that need to be done.  Carmax will then do it all.  It's pretty nice.  Every car I have test drove has brand new tires.  They seem to be all mechanically sound.  They have selling used cars down to a science.

The Meh:
There is no wiggle room in the price.  What you see is what you get.  I like the art of the deal.  I like to think that I got a price that no one else could get.  I have to swallow my pride when I shop at Carmax.

The Bad:
Oh Carmax, I wish I could give you five stars, but I can't due to the low ball offers on our cars leave a lot to be desired.  I have had two appraisals done at Carmax.  In both occurrences, I have sold the cars to private parties for twice what Carmax would pay.  I get they need to make a margin, but I'd rather spend my time and effort for what ends up being over $1,000.  

MJ's Quick Tip:  Don't borrow money to buy a car.  Cars go down in value.  Buy used and save, pay for your car with cash.  Carmax takes cash, I can speak from experience.  Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine says that a new car will lose 60 percent of its value in the first four years. Turning $30,000 into $11,000 is not good, 0% interest or not.

Excellent, quick service from a professional staff.   I only went to sell a car and they were fine with that.   They treated me professionally and gave me an offer that was 25% higher than what I was expecting.

I cannot begin to express the level of excellent service I got from Carmax when I went there to sell my car. I had no intention of buying a car from them when I went to go sell my vehicle, and they did not pressure me into doing so, as I had explained in the beginning that I was not in the market for a vehicle.

The wait time was a little longer than I thought, but definitely worth the wait. The gentleman that assisted me, Carlos Olvera, was very nice and clearly explained the entire process to me. Within an hour, I had an offer for my car that far exceeded my expectations, and was even larger than I could have gotten in a private sale (I had it listed on Craigslist for a few days and had already relisted it at a lower price once).

The buying process was quick and painless, and I walked out of there with a draft to take to the bank! I would definitely return if I ever needed to sell a vehicle, and I would also recommend it to anyone else trying to sell their car. When you go there once, you can make an appointment for the next time, so you can skip the initial wait.

I went to Carmax to get a price for my car because I was told they tend to give more than other dealers do for a trade-in.

They were a little busy when I got there so there was about an hour wait before they were able to evaluate my car.

Once the process started, it went pretty quickly. All of the employees I talked to there were nice and helpful. They ended up giving me the same value for my car that the dealer I was purchasing from gave me. It was lower than I was expecting and much lower than my car is worth, so I ended up not selling to Carmax (I will sell the car myself). This isn't so much a fault to them as it is just what the market for my car was doing at the time.

If you're looking to get rid of your car, I recommend taking a couple of hours and seeing what they will give you. At the very least, it will be a pain free way to guarantee you sell your car.

I cannot comment on the actual buying process here as I did not work with any sales staff because I knew going into it that I was not purchasing from them. I can say that they did not try to talk to me about buying one of their cars while mine was being evaluated. Once I told them I already had a car at another dealer, that was the end of it.  The actual car evaluation too about 25 min.
