Reviews on Hertz

OMG. I wish I would have read the reviews! Absolutely horrible. I rented a car for one day. My total was $70.00 Check my back account Monday  charged $479.00 wish 3 over draft fees. WHY? Because Hertz was closed Saturday when I was returning the car and didn't check me back in until Monday. They told me that I should have returned a car on a day they are open. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

When I called to dispute this I was transferred 3 times and put on hold for about 40 mins. It's been 4 days and I still have not received my $400.00

I have to use this location because it's closest to where I live. I always dread going there. The place is consistently understaffed, often with only one person. Today the office was closed when I arrived because she stepped out for lunch. When she is there, there's a line, the phone's ringing, no one knows where the cars are, etc. When I do get my car it often smells like smoke, isn't clean, or doesn't have a full tank. Most of the staff (not all) provide service with a snarl.

I started traveling frequently for work starting in early February and have been using this location of Hertz since. I've rented from this location at least six times, probably more, over a period of 3+ months. It's convenient for me because it's close to my house. I've seen it all though, and by all, I mean all of the terrible customer service and sly ways they try to get more money out of each customer:

1) Never, ever, despite being a repeat customer and spending thousands of dollars at this location, have I been warmly greeted by anyone who works here. Sometimes they aren't even cordial or remotely nice, just a brick wall taking my money.

2) For some reason they can't print out receipts at the office when you return the car so you have to wait until they send it to you over e-mail. I have received an emailed copy of the receipt MAYBE 50% of the time. When I finally do receive it, it often has unexpected charges on it and it takes me forever to get them worked out. For instance, I arrived early for my rental several weeks ago and they charged me for $11.25 for an extra hour but NEVER told me I would be charged that. I would have waited another 30 minutes to avoid the charge but they never let me know.

3) The car I choose online is rarely the one I get. Often I am upgraded to an SUV but I have no interest in this because it doubles my gas cost (I'm driving out of state) and is no more comfortable than a sedan. I realize they can't always have the exact same car as on the website but the availability shouldn't differ by that much.

4) I bring along my own tollpass because it saves me time and it is easy to print out my records for expense reimbursement. Hertz provides something called PlatePass on a lot of its cars which is supposed to make it convenient for rental customers so they can drive right through the e-pass and not have to stop and/or worry about having cash. A single toll through PlatePass cost me $7, MORE THAN THREE TIMES the normal toll rate. It's a complete ripoff and scam. On top of that, sometimes they charge me for tolls even when I have the PlatePass covered up and I am using my own tollpass. I was charged $21 the other day when I was using my own tollpass without any explanation from them. Like other random charges, this takes forever to resolve.

All in all, this place is a disaster. I give it 2 stars instead of 1 because the cars they do have are generally nice and new, but I'm desperately trying to find a different rental company. If this is the standard for the car rental industry, it's a sad one.

Absolutely horrible customer service. The first rental car I was given had the "check engine light" on. I had to go back and exchange it for another rental which has expired Chicago city sticker. I was given a $200 ticket for the expired sticker, and had to bring the ticket back to Hertz and get a THIRD car in 2 days. I left my CD in the 2nd car and asked the manager to hold it for me, and when I went back he couldn't find it.

Also after I returned the 3rd car, I was mistakenly billed for an additional day (which the manager never explained). The charge was not even valid as I had returned the car in the allotted time. When I called customer service to discuss they told me there was nothing they could do. After several more phone calls I was finally was able to speak with someone who reimbursed the charge, but it was not an easy task to get the reimbursement.

I will definitely use ENTERPRISE next time.

Don't ever go here!
I rented a car here 2 days ago through hotwire and needed to extend my rental 1 day, I extended the rental through the 800 number but was not able to extend the insurance since I still had the car and they were not able to see the car. I called the office and they told me to come in so that they could take a look at the car and they would extend my insurance. I went into the office and the same person that I talked to 10 minutes prior said she didn't realize I already extended the rental (i just told her this info on the phone) through 800 number and I would need to do another rental at twice the rate if I wanted insurance.

I went home and realized they took another $100 holding fee in addition to my $200 I paid at the time of rental. I called them back they said there was nothing they could do and the rental would be due back the following day at 11:30 at which time the now $300 hold would be taken off my account. I went the return the car the following day and the office was closed - again no one said anything about the office being closed on the weekends. I found signs that said to return the keys to the drop box, after I put the keys in the drop box I noticed a sign that said if you return after hours you will be charged until the office opens up!!! So 2 extra days for no reason!!!

I again called the 800 number and there was nothing they could do. I said can I at least get another rental since I am paying for it? They said no.

Oh and the car had no wiper fluid and the woman told me to go buy some and they will give me $3.00. I didn't realize that I now need to service a rental car as well.

I rented a car for this location and when I showed up to get my car, they were "out of cars." According to the man there, the online registration overnight had not been closed and they were overbooked. There were at least 15 people waiting for cars, all of which had reservations, that did not get cars on time or at all. I luckily got a car, but not for  an hour after my reservation. I will NEVER book with Hertz again, as they are unreliable and have poor customer service.
