Iowa's #1 Honda Dealer offering great deals for your Honda in service, parts and sales.

History

Established in 2009.

Is there a "Mr. Smart"? We get this one a lot! There answer is "not exactly." True, we are a family-owned business. Michael Leep, from Mishawaka, IN owns the Gurley-Leep family of dealerships which consists of 23 stores in Indiana, Michigan and Iowa. "Smart" reflects each and every one of our employees' attitude towards doing business.
Buying or servicing a car at our store reflects how we would want it to be if we were on the other side of the transaction. We would want to be treated with respect. We would want a clear explanation of pricing and charges. We would want a good value for our money. All that just makes sense. So in effect we are all "Mr. Smart."

We already knew what we wanted but the salesman didn't know how to react I guess.
We told John Rolf what we wanted and asked for a price. He could only respond to our question with questions.
I told him what I wanted & what options I was flexible with. I didn't need to test drive all I wanted was for him to tell me what he could give me and what it would cost. What more would a salesman want?
He was confused and lost. I felt sorry for him honestly.

I find their service department to be extremely pushy in the services they tell you to purchase in order to have a safe car.  In fact, after they put the hard sell on my wife to do four different services that would have totaled close to $1,000, I did a search online and Honda--the manufacturer of the car they were servicing and that they sell--explicitly states that three of the services are NOT NECESSARY and also states that one of them could easily damage the car's drivetrain! If a Honda dealer is recommending, in a VERY pushy way, services that the manufacturer of the car recommends against, something is very, very wrong in my opinion.  The fourth service they tried to sell was new air filters, stating that ours were "completely clogged," which was a flat out lie since I had changed them literally the week before and know for a fact that they were brand new.  I assume they speculate that 99% of people don't even know where the air filter is, much less change them on their own, but it was a lie, pure and simple, and had my wife not been in a rush, she easily could have been snookered into four wasteful services.

Add to that the fact that they are extremely difficult to get appointments with for basic service, and the fact that they act as though you are lucky that they agree to take your car, I would highly recommend taking your business elsewhere!

Smart Honda repaired my wife's Saturn Vue AC. And did a full tune up and fluids. Car had been running like a champ for over a year.

Don't buy here.  I would suggest shopping on the internet for better pricing using a free service like Autobytel.  Of the five quotes I received Smart Honda was the highest by almost $3,000 on the exact same vehicle.

Drive a few miles and save a lot of green!

I recently took my car in for an oil change. I had made an appointment 2 weeks prior to my visit. Upon my arrival I was told that I could take up to an hour before they would even get my car in for just a basic oil change. They ended up "pushing my car to the front" since I had an appointment but still took longer than what I've ever dealt with in the past. When the vehicle was returned to me I noticed a scratch in the inside of my windshield. I must say for owning this car and going to different dealerships over the years smart honda has been the worst customer service I've ever had.

Do not buy from Smart Honda!!  The main reason is their service department.  My son recently had an experience with them that is questionably negligent and incredibly poor service.  The Better Business Bureau bbb.org has Smart Honda rated at a D- and Smart Honda is not an accredited BBB business, so buyer beware!  They performed work on my son's car, inspected the brakes and gave him options.  Within 2 weeks he was driving down I-80 and the lug nuts that Smart overtightened (according to another car service business) broke and the wheel almost fell off.  When my son went to Smart for some compensation, due to their poor work, he was ignored.  Smart Honda does not deserve anyone's business and the BBB.org website is proof of that!

Am not impressed with the customer service department! They are not interested in the customers at all....all about getting the $.
I have a vehicle with a battery that is 3 months old in it and they will not uphold the warranty because it was bought by the previous owner of the car. In my option that is crap! I bought the vehicle with the confidence that it had a new battery and would be fine for at least 5 years. Will not be doing business there even though I own 2 Honda's.

Their service department has some of the worst customer service I have experienced at a dealership. My mother recently purchased a brand new car not more than a year ago from them with warranty. She had problems with the Bluetooth in the car. She lives almost 100 miles away from Des Moines and had to make 3 trips for them to figure out the problem. Then she was told she'd have to make a fourth trip to install a part. When my mother expressed concern about all the trips she was making the person in the service department told her it wasn't his fault she lived out of town. My sister tried talking to them and he responded to her saying, "We were doing just fine till you chimed in." Apparently this place only cares about making sales and not repeat business. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST.

Nice folks here!  With a no presure to buy vibe.  You can test drive as many cars as you like and they will not try hassle you into something.. I also noticed when I check in on Yelp, they give you a 5 dollars off your next Oil change!  That's cool.

When I am ready to buy I will go back here just cause the folks were super nice!

Well a couple months later i came back and got a new car! Thanks Matt, Josh and the rest of the Honda gang!

I began the process of purchasing the Honda Element they had on their pre-owned lot. They had it listed at 11,500 and offered me a trade in value of 2500 on my current vehicle. That put us at 9000. I said I couldn't afford that and was requoted to 7339 cash + 2500 for trade in. I agreed to that cost. Spent two hours there and ran home to get my title. I came back and when signing the papers was quoted 9839 Cash + 2500 trade in to purchase the vehicle. This would mean they were actually charging me 12339 for the vehicle.

I couldn't afford that (which I clearly stated up front) and proceeded to waste my whole morning. I am frustrated that I was promised one price and then wasted my morning and a trip home. I feel that 9839 (Cash + Trade in) is a fair offer for the vehicle.  That is simply discounting the cost of the vehicle 1600. While I realize that is a decent amount, it certainly isn't unreasonable.

My experience was incredibly frustrating, dishonest and inconsiderate.

I do not recommend this dealership.  We tried to buy a new civic that they were advertising on tv.  We spent 4 hours with  Mr Tillinghoust doing all the paperwork.  We agreed on  the price they advertised, and at the very end wound up almost $10,000 higher, because he "just sold the last car at that price"  and the best he could do was the car $10,000 more expensive.  When we questioned this, Mr Tillinghoust got very condescending and rude.  He got huffy and actually walked away. Walked Away! We sat there shocked waiting for a long while, and made a decision to not buy there. Good thing, too because we went to Honda in Ames the next weekend and they were professional.  They listened and treated us like customers that they appreciated and respected.  We bought that same day at Ames Honda and are very satisfied.

A CRV is the tow car for our motorhome and it needed an oil change.  The facility is large and clean and they gave us top notch, quick service.  We were in and out in about an hour.  Large, pleasant waiting room with coffee and doughnuts.    Highly recommend this business.
