Like a lot of parents we were looking for a safe, reliable car in the $5000-$6000 range bout 8 years old  with around 100,000 miles for our 23 year old recent college grad.   After a month of dealing with not-so-honest private sellers, no inventory at that price new car dealers and many of the used car lots with auction cast-offs that dot the Atlanta landscape we finally stumbled on Atlanta Sports and Imports just off Buford Hwy north of 285.      

They are the proverbial "hidden gem" as they have no storefront and no corner lot full of cars.  With no "walk-in" traffic all their business is by appointment only from those who visit their website.  It is run by a father and son team - Len (the dad - an Oceanographer by trade) and his son David (ex Audi dealership employee).  They have leased space in a nondescript commercial plaza with a spacious and neat office in the front and a huge warehouse of gleaming high end cars in the back  that look like they just rolled off the assembly line onto the  polished concrete show room floor.    Len told me that they spent $8000 on energy efficient, super bright lights to remove all hint of dinginess from the cavernous space.   The have an onsite lift, a detailing area, a couple of mechanics and a detail specialist to recondition their cars.  

Aside from their used car business they do high-end detailing.  As you can tell from the posters and models around the office Len is a Porsche aficionado with several of his own that have won Concours competitions.    

So what were we doing surrounded by late model BMWs and Porsches when we were looking for a Jetta or Camry?

AS&I had taken a 2003 Passat Wagon with 119,000 miles as a trade and had it listed for $6000.  Normally at that mileage he would have taken it to auction but it was so clean they put it up on the website where we found it.  We felt it was worth the trip from Alpharetta to take a look but it was late after work and he was closing at 7 pm and we couldn't make it on time... no problem he said, I'll wait until you get here.  

We arrived about 8 pm and it was a bit hard to find as there is no signage at all.  You would think it was an office building not a car showroom.    The car was gorgeous with all the trimmings of the GLX version - leather, wood grain, sunroof etc.  David had a copy of the Carfax ready for us along with a list of all the things his guys had done to make it perfect.  When we asked him about price negotiation he whipped out his iPad and showed us the NADA, Kelly, Edmunds, Black Book etc pricing and then a scatter dot diagram of the price of every 2003 Passat GLX within 635 miles with the price for this one showing as a red dot on the lower end of all of them.  What could we say about the price?  We were clearly getting a good deal.  Assuming, of course, the car checked out on our Pre-Purchase Inspection at nearby Jim Ellis Volkswagen where we had 2 other private party Jettas checked out - both failed miserably.  

"No problem" said David, "just call Jim Ellis, make an appointment and we'll take it over there for you".  Next day, got the appointment for 10 am, they delivered the car and a couple of hours later we got a call from the service rep at Ellis.  "Are you ready for the list of what we found?" he said.  Long pause... "so that's the list."    Nothing wrong at all.  The rep said it was about the cleanest, most meticulously maintained car he'd seen in a long time.  He was shocked that with the mileage his guys didn't find a single thing.

Needless to say, with a sigh of relief we bought the car.  Which according to Len is usually what happens as 50% of the people who come for an appointment drive off with a car.

It had been a long, time consuming and often disappointing search so we were truly grateful to find AS&I and recommend them highly.
