Reviews on Volvo San Diego

Had the most disappointing interaction. Arranged to meet to purchase a vehicle we had been communicating about via email for almost a week. Had funding in place and appointment was for a specific time as dealership is quite a distance from my home. Arrived 1 hour early and was told vehicle was sold an hour earlier.
What came after was a lot of back and forth and haggling over price of a "substitute vehicle."
We finally left, feeling disgusted over how we were treated. Bottom line became a game. There was a $300 difference between what new car would be that we were being "switched to" since they sold our car. We weren't willing to pay the $300-not because of the money but because of what a horrible experience it was and it wasn't even for the car we wanted. I followed up with an email to the owner of the dealership which was not even acknowledged.
In today's world of customer driven organizations-not to mention plain old common decency-I would not have expected this treatment.
Beautiful vehicles, great inventory, but to be treated like this is not worth it.
Kudos to Juan whose integrity showed through despite the folks he works for who ruined this experience.
I'd buy a vehicle from him anytime-just not under these circumstances.

I drive a 1993 volvo 850 the bulbs on my radio burned out i called the local dealer near my house they said they do not carry the bulbs or no longer sell the radio they suggested i try to order on line or look in the junkyard i ordered a radio online it came today the local dealer was closed when i got the radio in the mail I called here only because of the 3 hour time difference.  the only reason i called you in the parts department was to get the radio code the parts person wanted to charge 10 for a radio code i should not have to pay because i wanted to buy a new radio for the car i also complained to volvo corporate they offered me 30% off a new radio if i bought it from the dealer guess what volvo dont make the radio no more so the 30% off was useless. When i originally bought my car used i had to get the radio code because the owner did not know it i went to my local dealer gave them the vin number no charge. This place is such a rip off.

hi
i took my v-70 volvo in for its 70,000 mile service when it unfortunately refused to start
the team at volvo is just outstanding
Damien took delivery of the car and gave us an honest opinion of  the estimate for repair
also he recomended changing out some tires as there were multiple nails in 3/4 tires
he left us with some options but wasn't pushy
i found dennis also very personable when i took delivery of the car after we idid wheel alignment
i was very pleased because i was able to reach   the service desk  without any problems, when i picked up the car so that i could plan my day
Volvo also provided me with ashuttle on the days i couldn't use the car
all in all  it was  a  very pleasant experience
i would unstintedly recomend sd volvo to anyone

If there was a lower rating than 1 star I would have selected it for Volvo San Diego, which was the worst car experience in my life. The "customer service representatives"  in the service center are absolutely not knowledgeable of Volvo cars and were not able to help at all. Then the bill comes and it's 5 times more than the estimate. If that was not enough, they "ordered the wrong part" and kept my car for four days for a simple service call. Absolutely unacceptable service. I'll never go back there.

This is a review of SERVICE.
I'm glad others have had a positive experience with service.  We have not.  We are tired of being treated like we've walked in from Mars when we make appointments.   "Do you know who you spoke to?  Did you have an appointment?  Are you in our system?"  People:  I have not wandered in off the street to browse for a new handbag.  We are more tired of poor communication between service "advisors" and technicians which resulted in an expensive investigation of a non-issue.  We've been loyal for a long time but I've officially had it.

We bought our Volvo here a couple of years ago, and we use their service department for the usual stuff-- scheduled service, as well as the occasional question, problem, or concern.  The sales staff was fine when we bought our car-- no nonsense, no hard sell, just a straightforward, friendly sales process.  The service department is outstanding: professional, friendly, efficient, and above all they have great mechanics.  No problems at all-- we think they're great.

If you want to buy a Volvo and receive outstanding customer service with a smile, look no further.  These guys are AWESOME!

My wife has driven a Volvo XC90 for the past 10 years and decided to trade in for another XC 90 (great car, by the way - by far, it's the best looking SUV on the road).

Juan helped me with the process and explained all the options in full detail.  I was never pressured during the process and Juan was very knowledgeable and friendly.  He then passed me to the finance department where I received great service as well from Mary.  Finally, I walked out with a great looking car and an awesome deal.

I will be their customer for life!  :)

This was a nice, low pressure experience. Sergio was professional, courteous, and respectful of our time. I was also pleasantly surprised not to have to do battle with the finance manager over unwanted service contracts. Overall, a very positive experience and I would recommend this lot.

Nicest car buying experience I've ever had. I'd been shopping for a while, and when I saw a 2014 S60 with 14K miles for a stellar price I was all about it. Only problem, I live in Phoenix, this dealership is in San Diego. I gave them a call, spoke to Juan who assured me that purchasing/financing despite being a resident of Arizona would be no problem. So, about 6 hours later I was in San Diego and signing the paperwork. Despite being a "no haggle" dealership, they happily took care of a couple minor service issues at no cost. Kyle over in finance was also excellent. Informative, but not remotely pushy and had my paperwork completed in about 20 minutes. Would not hesitate to buy from Volvo San Diego again, despite the 5 hour drive.

We recently purchased a used Honda CRV (trade in) from Volvo San Diego and we had a great experience. We saw the car at about 4:45 on Auto Trader, called (and spoke with Richard) to see if it was available, test drove it by 5:30 and drove it off the lot by 8:00. Utterly painless.

Richard was friendly, helpful and upfront about the pricing from the start. We had pleasant conversations with a few other employees (whose names I unfortunately don't remember) and ended in financing with Kyle (also extremely friendly and even gave us tips about Seattle--our destination for the first road trip we're taking in the CRV).

Overall, a GREAT experience and we would definitely recommend San Diego Volvo to friends and family.

I had an outstanding experience with this dealership. I went through the Costco auto program to buy my V60 to get a discount. When I showed up at the dealership, Sergio Curiel was the dealer assigned to help me. He was very knowledgeable about the car, and we worked together to get one with all the crash prevention technology and other items that I wanted.

Since V60s in the United States don't usually have the technology package, mine had to be built from the ground up in Sweden and then shipped over here. It took about 4 months. In that time, I asked Sergio a lot of questions, and he always answered them in a timely manner (usually the same day, even when he was off work!).

When my car arrived, we worked on getting Sirius and Volvo On Call all set up. I drove off with a great car, and I've been happy ever since. It's especially nice, and I already know that my next car will also be a Volvo!

Nancy W. | 2014-12-10

I took my XC60 in for a tuneup and Damien met me with a smile.  I had several other minor concerns (I was having trouble connecting my iPhone, for example).  He patiently took care of each little one right away.  I must admit that I get worried when I take my car in for service, so I wasn't all that chipper. But Damien kept being courteous and calmly dealt with my concerns.  I told him about my rear brakes and he called me later on to say I needed to have them replaced.  He gave him a price that seemed reasonable.  The whole experience was positive.   And I even got to use my 10% coupon :-)

We purchased a second vehicle from Richard following this review...probably in March or April. Another GREAT experience.

I rarely come onto yelp to write a review but the San Diego Volvo Service center deserves my effort after all that they did for us.  We purchased a used XC90 here a few years ago and as a side note I had done a lot of research on these cars and knew the going prices for them and had looked at a few before we came upon the one at the volvo center.  It was far and away better quality for the price than anything else we had seen.
Moving on we bought the extended warranty on it.  Well my transmission started to have issues.  We brought it in and the warranty company at first seemed to be helpful.   After a few days however it became a nightmare. They tried to screw us on items that were clearly covered under the warranty.  That is where our hero DAMIAN came in.  He was in daily contact with the warranty company fighting for each and every item they needed to cover. He patiently explained each step of the process to us, broke down pricing, gave us advice on things we could do to get the warranty company to comply, and described all the options we had to fix the transmission.  He even diagrammed the pieces that were broken for me - where they were and what they did.  They loaned us a car to use for a few days AND the manager heard of our plight and gave us a discount on the remaining work we needed done. After all that we got most of what we needed from the warranty company.
I really cannot say enough for what the service center did for us.  Damian especially was so kind and helpful and responsive to every little thing we asked.  Its rare I get this sort of personal attention from any company let alone an auto service center.
Thank you Volvo and again especially Damian for the great attention you gave us through a very painful and difficult process.  I would recommend you guys to anyone who asked.

Outstanding- from the time I called to schedule the appointment, to the quick and thorough service.  Recently moved to the area from VA and this is the first time we have been to SD Volvo. Such a nice change from our previous experiences- much easier to get a convenient appointment, quick service, and complimentary shuttle if needed! Will definitely be coming here again!

Lara S. | 2014-09-29

I bought my car here and the service has been excellent when I've been back. I drove a separate car over there and got locked out of it--they stayed late and helped me get back in. Great customer service all around!

Candice B. | 2014-09-15

Just had my #2 V70 wagon serviced here.  I -- and my cars -- have always been treated well here.  My first Volvo was purchased elsewhere but I switched to SD Volvo for servicing.  Because I have been so happy with them, I purchased my second Volvo from them and continue to return there for the service.  I highly recommend Volvos and SD Volvo.

Randy A. | 2014-09-14

My wife and I have been taking our two Volvos here for service since we first got them in 2003 and we have always felt like they treated us fairly, honestly, and friendly.  I know friends who choose to come here over other Volvo service depts.  The availability of service on Saturday is a life saver.  Keep up the great work!

Michael S. | 2014-09-04

Great convenient location off the 163 Freeway.  I had my Volvo S60 serviced there and Frank and the team took great care of my car.  The shuttle service worked out great as well.  I would highly recommend them for servicing your car Volvo or even buying one! Thanks San Diego Volvo!

My terrific little Volvo was bought at San Diego Volvo almost 11 years ago. BUT I live in SF. I needed something minor done that I could have done locally but I chose to wait until I was in San Diego again so that I could go to San Diego Volvo, my husband thought I was crazy. SO last month we sashayed into San Diego Volvo, were greeted by Frank (wish I knew his last name), he immediately knew exactly what to do, we had a great laugh with him and we were out of there in minutes. My husband took back the thinking I was crazy, because he knew the customer service and knowledge we had just encountered could not be beat!  For 11 years the service and experienced staff at San Diego Volvo has been exemplary! Thank you for taking such good care of your customers and instilling such loyalty.

Read all their Yelp reviews and decided to check them out. From the first phone call about a 2012 Volvo they had on their lot to the moment I drove home with it I was treated like gold. Gene Rollins our salesman and Mary in finance were absolutely a joy to work with. I noticed a few very small dings on my 2012 Volvo pre- owned car and right away their manager arranged for the bumper to be repainted. Picked up the car the next day.  I am giving San Diego Volvo 5 stars. I would recommend them to everyone who has any history of nervousness in purchasing a new or preowned car. Their professional treatment of their customers is A- plus!

I have an S40 and started the paperwork to buy an SUV from Volvo but now I'm afraid to even own a new Volvo for the simple fact that this is my closest dealership and they totally suck! I called to make an appt and they said their service guy was not there but took my number and guess what? More than a week later no phone call, still no appointment. I then went online and put on for an appointment through their online appointment system that states they will confirm your appt within 24 hours via email. Guess what, no email and still no appointment! I call Volvo 1-800 number and tell them and they say those dealerships are private own but helped me get in touch with someone. I talk to a guy ( not pressed with his customer service skills) and made an appt and told him I wanted to talk to a manager and voices my concern and complaint and of course " He was away from his desk" so I got offered to leave him a voicemail and guess what I got to my surprise??? Disconnected!!!' I hate this Volvo dealer and they should be ashamed for giving Volvo a bad name! I will no longer be purchasing a new Volvo due to the fact this is how they do business.

This review for the service department. These guys work very slow, the receptionist put me on hold for 30 minutes ( I supposed to be connected to the service advisor), nobody answered the phone... I called again... the same result , I was on hold for a while.... On my 3rd call the lady offered a call back in few minutes form the advisor.... nobody returned the call.... On my 4th call she put me on hold again, and I've got the same result. I have to find another mechanic to fix my S40. I will never call them again!!

Like other reviews, the sales department was a great experience. The service department was the complete opposite. I bought a brand new volvo s60 here two weeks ago. Days after I purchased it, the AC only works half the time!! Although frustrating, I realize this is not necessarily the fault of the dealer since it did work during the test drive. I make an appointment to get it fixed. I show up and they think I'm getting the enhancing coat put on (this was scheduled for the next day) and have no clue that I'm supposed to be there. They diagnose the problem, replace the sensor, and call me to pick it up. I rush to get my car  before they close and the rental lady isn't even around to take back the courtesy rental. Not to mention, on my hot commute home, the AC blows nothing but hot air!!! I immediately call Frank, my service rep, and he replies "they said it worked fine earlier." Obviously it wasn't checked before I was given the car because it didn't work for the next three miserably hot days. Yes, Frank told me to bring it back the following Monday because he was off until then. In the meantime, I get a small scratch and take it back to get the AC fixed. It took three days  to figure out it was a loose wire from the sensor they replaced a week earlier. While it was in the shop, I asked them to order the correct color of touch-up paint so I could cover the small scratch. When I pick up my car, I receive a bill for $44! When I inquire about why the little bottle of paint was so much, Frank informs me that they cut me a 'deal' with the paint ($18.80) and the rest if the bill was the charge from the 'paint doctor' to put it on the car. WTF!!! I was never asked if I wanted to pay someone to put the paint on my for $35!! The scratch was shallow and less than a quarter inch in length. It also was just slapped on and I could have done a better job myself for FREE!!! I will not be taking my car back here for future service. They are not doing anything positive for the Volvo brand which is sad because that is what Volvo is known for. Buy from here but maintain elsewhere.

This review is STRICTLY for the SERVICE DEPT.  I took my 2004 XC90 into the dealership after needing some brake work.  I have previously took my vehicle to an independent shop, but they have been slipping of late and gave me an outrageous price quote.  I called up Damien Burton and he was amongst the most attentive, helpful professionals I have worked with at a car dealership.  He quoted out the job, explained the scope of the work and provided me a free 2015 Volvo sedan to use while the job was being done.  The price was almost 40% LESS expensive than the shop that I had been going to for years.  Moving forward, I will be taking my car to San Diego Volvo for all maintenence required.

Excellent service and great staff! My 15 year old Volvo was having ETS issues and I was able to schedule service for it just a few days later. Dennis was so helpful. I actually had my Volvo towed in due to not being able to accelerate and Dennis set everything up. My car was ready two days later (Saturday) but I was unable to pick it up until Monday. My car was washed and when they noticed a tire was flat (just bought the tires in Dec) upon bringing her around to me, they inspected it. They found a screw in it and fixed my tire while I waited. I couldn't be happier with the excellent service and will now be ditching my local mechanic to bring my car to such a great dealer for all future repairs and servicing. Oh, and the price for the repair was way below what I thought it would be! Great, friendly staff. Quick repair. And superior customer and automotive services!

The Service Department at Kearny Mesa Vovlo is absolutely top notch.  I have an 11 year old S80 and they've taken care of it impeccably.  The service staff takes great care to ensure I'm comfortable with the information they're presenting and enthusiastically explains details if requested.  They like their business, obviously.  It's a "no brainer," they'll continue to get my business.

Jonathan S. | 2014-07-19

The entire staff is informative, attentive, and friendly, especially the Service Advisors. I've never been overcharged, I've always been updated throughout the service, and I've easily gotten work done while waiting at the available individual work stations.

M Z. | 2014-06-26

I called to make an appointment for a 90K mile service; I just relocated to San Diego.

I was transferred 3 times before I reached Frank. I was shocked at the conversation I had with Frank. I stated I wanted to make an appointment and would need a loaner vehicle for the day. I listened to 5 minutes on cost benefit of deciding if I may have a vehicle for the day.

A simple "NO" would have worked, or just state it in not your policy. But to listen to a speech about the owners and the cost of doing business was not necessary. As I told Frank I will take my business elsewhere.

My husband's car broke down and the cost of fixing vs cars worth made us decide that we needed to get another car. Being that I just purchased a new family car about a year ago and already have a very high payment, we were on a strict budget.Volvo in addition to nearby dealerships had some cars that we were interested in. At first when we came it was like a ghost town. The cars are open so we were able to see the one that we liked which was a 2008 Honda Accord EX-L with Navigation. We waited and waited and no one ever came. We decided to go to another dealership and see if we can test out some other vehicles and would later return to Volvo. We went next door and tested out a Ford and the engine and start up sounded like crap! We knew that the Honda was our car.

We ran some errands then came back and luckily this time we were helped. Adrian assisted us and he was a very friendly, not pushy,  not your typical sleeze ball salesman. This is what I liked about him and the Volvo dealership. We weren't buying a Volvo and they still treated us very well. We received a great deal on the car...I was planning to negotiate but later decided not to as the KBB was coming up about 4k higher. Volvo thought they could match the rate we received from Capital One Auto, but they could not. My husbands credit is in the mid 600's and they just could not get a better rate, for that, we were a little bummed but we still drove off with our car. To top it off, the whole process took less than 3 hours. When I bought my brand new car about a year ago, the nightmare was almost 7 hours and I had my own financing and was treated horribly. Volvo San Diego was a refreshing experience. We will not need another car for a few more years but when I do, I will not hesitate to buy at Volvo San Diego, in fact, I might just buy a brand new Volvo. I love the S60s. :)

Kudos to Frank P. And George C. In the service center!! Awesome Awesome!! You really get what you pay for. Thanks for taking care of my car and for being patient with me:). Love the personal touch!!

I have been bringing my car here since it was new 2001
It took over two hours to do an oil and filter change.
I was the first one here at 0700.

Sally M. | 2014-05-26

I purchased my Volvo here over 4 years ago and my husband purchased his almost 10 years ago. When we purchased my Volvo, we were able to use both the Costco Auto Program and also get a Volvo loyalty credit. The sales process was pretty easy. We actually weren't planning on buying a car, but since my husband's Volvo was in for service, we thought we'd just check out the cars on the lot. After some negotiation, we got a great deal on my Volvo as well as great financing.

Both my husband and I have taken our cars for service and have always had a great experience. My car is still under warranty, so I take it in every so often for scheduled maintenance. The service guys always make sure to provide me with a quote on any potential work that may not be under warranty. My car is also usually done earlier than the estimated time and they make sure to call me whenever it is ready. When picking up my car, it is always washed and ready to go. On the times we've taken our cars in for service not under warranty, we still get the same great customer service and pricing isn't too bad. They often send out coupons via mail/email and even give you a free car wash coupon for your birthday. Scheduling an appointment is really easy and can be done online or over the phone. I usually can make next day appointments without a problem.

Gilbert Anthony G. | 2014-05-22

Atrocious. I don't even know where to begin. I'd give zero stars if it were possible. Though, let me start off by saying that everything from their sales department's end was very professional. My financing with Adrian Masters, the British salesman, couldn't have gone any better. Their service department is a whole other story though. The car had a few dings on it and a scuff on my left rear view mirror. Adrian and I had knowledge of this and had already set a date to get these fixed within a week's radius, though by a third party person that comes in twice a week, not Volvo's service department. Upon being given my car back from Volvo's service department, Julio Torres as my assigned advisor, on May 20, I noted how my dings were fixed by not the scuff on the rear view mirror. Julio acts clueless, brings in Adrian, my salesman, which leads Adrian to bring his higher-up, who tells me they have another third party person that fixes scuffs and he does not come in until tomorrow. He takes off the cover of my rear view mirror, then tells me they'll keep it for the scuff repairman and will call me once he fixes it the following day. Cool. Once I get home, I notice another old scuff on the right side passenger door, so I call back and tell them I'll have to actually drop the car off the following day since it's not just my rear view mirror. The same day I set the appointment for the scuffs, my car batter starts indicating a low battery power, so I call back to add that to my appointment checklist. I kid you not, as soon as I got off the phone with my advisor, my car battery dies on me. My car is a certified pre-owned, so I'm covered and call Volvo's roadside assistance for a jump, and they send over someone from Quality Towing. Upon arriving, the employee from Quality is able to jump my car, but tells me the battery has two dead seals; and since it is a large battery, the car will die out again and needs to be replaced. That's fine, I guess, it happens and it's a used vehicle, but I'm covered since it is a certified pre-owned. My appointment with Volvo's service department is the next morning at 8:30 AM. I'm in my car at 7:20 AM, and the battery is dead. I call Volvo Roadside again, and the same guy from Quality jumps my car again. So off to Volvo I go, and this is where everything becomes bad. Note: I arrived at Volvo around 9:00 AM since I was waiting for a jump until around 8:30 AM. For one, I'm missing work because of this. Not only was the next shuttle not scheduled until 10 AM, a whole hour upon arrival, but I wasn't even offered a loaner vehicle while my $26,000 car is being repaired after only a week's use. Let me emphasize on this once again, I am missing work and losing money for this. Back home I go through Volvo's shuttle service. Another note: Volvo's service department closes at 6:00 PM. From 10 AM to around 4:30 PM, about an hour and a half until closing time, I have yet to receive any phone calls from my assigned advisor, Julio Torres, about the status of my vehicle, which would leave me screwed if I'm not updated and given a loaner vehicle before they closed because I would end up missing work once more the following day. I attempted many phone calls with no success of reaching Julio, and even left voicemails. Finally, he calls back around 4:45 PM, telling me the shuttle is on its way to pick me up. Good news, my battery was replaced. Bad news, he tells me I need to talk to Adrian, my salesman about having the scuffs on my car fixed since the service department doesn't do that. You're kidding me, right? You work there, you are aware a third party handles that and are aware he is scheduled to be there that day, so why didn't you have him get it done like you were supposed to? The shuttle driver comes to pick me up, and he drives like a maniac. Aside from just being a terrible driver, he was also very reckless and looking down on his company phone most of the time; so he'd end up veering off lanes and even sitting at green lights for a while. Finally we arrive at SD Volvo, and they bring me my car. The rear view mirror cover still being off + the scuffs not fixed was only the beginning, the bigger problem was my car being severely damaged! The bottom rockers on BOTH passenger sides were damaged horribly. The right side rocker was dented and coming off,  and the left side rocker head a horizontal dent that extended over a foot and a half into the passenger door. The battery also appeared to be either, not the correct battery, or not installed properly and as it originally was. They agreed to have the right side rocker "popped back in", though their service manager was saying the left side damage looked old and they will be taking this to a professional to examine this, which would leave me responsible for getting it fixed if determined older than the current day. You better believe I took pictures of this incase I need to take legal action. Still, I'm left with no calls or updates from my advisor.

G'ma W. | 2014-05-17

I have had service at SD Volvo on two occasions, and the service was great. I pulled into service area and was told to take a seat in the waiting area and someone would come get me. When the gentlemen came to get me, he had already been to my car, checked my records, and then escorted me to the service technician who recorded my needs. Then the icing on the cake was that the shuttle drove me to my office and picked me up there later in the day. Incredible service.

I am updating and adding a start to this place.  They are on top of their game now, I don't know if something was said/done, but I'm, much happier.
________________________________________________________________

3 stars for this place, maybe 3.5. I love my car, and I purchased my 2014 Volvo last year using the Costco auto program. That went pretty smooth, but the sales person knew very little about my car. He couldn't pair my phone, and didn't know about the fog lights. There were a few other things as well, but these two seemed petty basic to me.

I figured the phone out and used Google to find out the lights were running day lights and we're automatic. These seemed like a few simple things the sales person should have known. But they did get me a 1.9% interest rate which beat my credit union.

The service reps that I have come into contact with have been very friendly and helpful. One driver that took me home while getting some servicing wouldn't listen to my directions, he was talking but not listening. When we got to the main intersection I was asked where to go, I replied that I told him to turn two lights ago 4 times.

Just this morning I pulled into the service department and there was an employee standing at the podium texting on his iPhone. He kept looking at me, but when I got out of my car he ignored me. I wasn't sure if he was going to take my info as I pulled up. I stayed in my car for a bit because he kept looking at me. Anyway I was a little confused, I think if he's going to text maybe do it out of the view of the customers.

This isn't a bad place and it's close, but I think some of the staff should get some customer service training. If there were another Volvo dealership in the area I would probably use it instead.

Well we have had Volvo's for a long time. And recently purchased our third from SDVolvo. However I think we are on our last one. But let me back up first, we took our previous one in for service right before a vacation to get it road ready. Well the Mechanic did not put all the bolts back in or loose and they back out causing us to have to waste a day of our vacation and the Service MGR was good but they did not have real solutions. I had to fix the car myself and they did not really take care of us for this mess us. Then we just recently purchased a used XC70 from them and they really would not deal on price but gave us a fair trade in. But it was like pulling teeth with our sales person Sergio Curel. Well they pitched us the car and it was broken and took them three days for us to get the car to us after the purchase due to them not following up on parts needed and mechanic having issues resolving the issue. More inconveniences....the resolution from the sales MGR was 300.00 and then when they sent the check it was for only 247.50. The whole thing just left a bad taste in our mouth...it was like once they get you hooked and papers signed its time to squeeze the customer.

Melissa L. | 2014-03-27

I purchased my XC60 here a few years ago and couldn't be happier.  The service department is one of the best that I have ever worked with.

Patrick E. | 2014-03-22

Had a regular change oil and filter service done on an appointment. I had it on a 10:30 appointment but waited for 2 hrs just for a simple oil change considering that I was not a walk-in. I could get way way more lesser time for that same service on other place nearby. And for an oil change and filter, they now charge you $60 for an XC 90 when I could just pay $45 in Ace Tire Center in Kearney Mesa using premium synthetic oil and filter and on a less service time period. I don't know if I will do my next change oil here again unless it is for a regular maintenance job. Not a happy camper!

On a side note, the service advisor that attended me was nice and accomodating. For that, instead of 1 star,I'm giving them 2 stars.

Dan C. | 2014-02-17

Damien is a very conscientious and thorough service advisor.  He provides prompt feedback and follows through on all requests, and more!  I consider him an important part of my overall confidence in the service I receive for my vehicle at San Diego Volvo.

Alan T. | 2014-02-08

I couldn't be happier with my new Volvo today! My entire car buying experience was awesome. Sergio was very patient, friendly and not one bit pushy or aggressive. I would happily recommend anyone looking at a Volvo to come here.

E J. | 2014-02-08

They are definitely making an effort to improve their customer service. Much better communication, now a positive attitude, and receptionists finally answer the phone. But, they often don't have basic parts in stock which require repeat trips to get the job done.  Also takes many attempts to get problem fixed and they sometimes can't figure it out. And they miss problems during routine services that then surface a month later, requiring yet another repeat trip. It's not enough to train them to be friendly and polite. Now someone has to train them how to fix cars!

A car dealer who treats people with respect, understands that buying a car is often a hellish experience fraught with tears, spikes in blood pressure and a feeling of doom. A car dealer who wants the experience to be....hold on to your socks....pleasant and enjoyable. What... say it isn't so...it can't be true... or is it possible that there is a car dealer willing to treat customers fairly and make putting yourself in debt for five years somehow enjoyable .

Here is our tale......Ok so with both boys off to college we actually had an extra car in the fleet. We thought it was silly to pay insurance on a car used to store goods for donation to Father Joe and decided to take two cars to market and bring home a new (or new to us) ride. We went to San Diego Volvo on a Sunday evening and the search began. We test drove an S60 and an XC60 (twice) and our salesman, Tim Hofman, stayed after closing to help us decide. We couldn't decide which vehicle worked best for us Sunday night and we left. Here is where the San Diego Volvo experience really diverged from the rest of the car seling world...he didn't hang on our leg pleading for us not to go, he didn't try to chase us down, he didn't call every fourteen minutes to "see if there is anything we need" and he didn't try to pressure us at all to make a decision. He respected our decision to take more time and treated us like a professional.

We went back after work for three more evenings to compare options and conduct more test drives. Another salesman, Richard, helped us one evening as Tim was off duty with another series of test drives without any pressure, cajoling, attitude or rolling of the eyes.

On our fourth visit we were ready to make our purchase. XC60....final answer. And we heading into the dreaded "sales cubicle of pain and pressure". I was not looking forward to a discussion of how much we needed undercoating, life insurance in case we kicked off before our loan was paid off or low balled on our trade in vehicles. Yes, vehicles....plural.... we proposed a "two-fer" and both cars were sent off with the used car manager, Gary. Oh here we go....now it will start....we were preparing ourselves to hear how both vehicles were best suited for a future use as boat anchors and were worth more as scrap. Greg came back with.....wait for it......a fair assessment of both the 2004 Volvo S80 and our 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid.

Well, the trade in portion had been successfully navigated and we were on to round two....the back and forth seemingly endless game of "negotiation" where he tries to get over on us and we try to "steal the car from the dealership". Again...nothing. No haggle, no pressure..... a fair price that was displayed on the vehicle and no effort to change (the switch part of bait and switch) that "preferred price" at all. The sales experience was painless.... really! When we were asked about a service or add on that we didn't want we were not subjected to any drawn out discussion about why we really needed the service or add on. Sales experience A+ in our book. Now on to the finance manger...maybe this is where the story will take  a tragic turn.

We were led down the hall to the finance manager's office. This is often the most feared and reviled part of the whole car buying experience. Culled from the herd of other shoppers, placed in a room where no one could hear our screams for help and we were introduced to our nemesis...the closer.... the brutal...wait a tic... Mary seems very nice.. affable even... let's give her a minute to get warmed up. Surely the XC 60 cannot leave this lot without some form of shenanigans. Mary, explained our documents, helped us sign on the dotted line and was pleasant and helpful and respectful and professional.....so much for the torture chamber of finance....again painless and actually very enjoyable.

Back to the sales floor where Tim had fueled and washed our new car, brought both trade in vehicles up so we could empty out the few remaining items and then he explained all of the features of our new XC60. We were free to leave... the parole board had met and we were sprung from... from what?

We were leaving (in an AWESOME new XC 60 may I add) a car dealer who indeed respects their customers, offers a true no haggle experience and provides a car buying experience that other dealers would do well to emulate. Tim, Richard, Gary, Mary and the sales manager (New Grandpa Ralph....who shared the beautiful pictures of his grandbaby born the night before) all teamed up to make this family happy with the experience of buying a car. If you are in need of a new or used car we suggest that you give San Diego Volvo an opportunity.

Smoothest vehicle transaction I have ever experienced! I was able to negotiate a great price! The staff and my sales rep (Tim) made
the transaction easy!

Andrew S. | 2013-12-11

My first Volvo car and experience with this dealership and it's been amazing! Gene my sales associate, is great and really knows his Volvo knowledge and takes time with you! The S60 is what convinced me over the Infiniti Q50, Mercedes C250 and others, but Gene made the whole transaction smooth and easy. The car itself is AWESOME and people can't believe it's a Volvo it's so sporty looking and cool! So far SUPER impressed with Volvo and San Diego Volvo dealership.

Saw a great deal on a used Prius and wanted to have it inspected by a Toyota Service Department. The problem... I live in Long Beach. Juan Zumaya arranged for the car to be sent to a nearby Toyota dealer while I drove to San Diego. By the time I arrived, the car was inspected and ready for me to test drive. I was treated with kindness and respect by Juan and the entire staff. Thanks everyone for a wonderful buying experience. These folks are great.

On Saturday afternoon, the battery in my S40 died.  I got it jumped and because I was traveling on Sunday, I drove directly to San Diego Volvo.  Although it was late in the day, Dennis went beyond the call of duty and had the battery checked and it proved to need replacing.  The battery was changed and I was on my way.

Five stars for Gene Rollins and Julie Vanloon! Back in July, Gene made my new car shopping experience quite enjoyable and informative. There was a certain something I used to gauge his integrity. He passed my little assessment, and as a result I started paying attention to his message ... and though I left the dealership well after office hours, never did I feel rushed. As for Julie, her personal care and follow through in the Service Department is top notch. Thank you Julie and Gene for customer satisfaction!

The radiator fan on our Volvo XC 90 gave out a couple of weeks ago. It was my little girl's birthday weekend at grandma's and felt like we were going to miss it all, but in less than two hrs we were back on the road. Thank you to the Vovlo team at Kearny Mesa! Frank - you're the man!

Colleen G. | 2013-10-21

If I could give more stars, I would!!! Absolutely perfect transaction.

I purchased a 2013 XC90 R Design from Irvine Volvo a month before, and some lady ran a red light and totaled my vehicle. My 18 month old, brother, and I were perfectly safe, and the woman t-boned me at about 50 mph without slowing at all. I will NEVER BUY ANYTHING BUT A VOLVO for the rest of my life. The way it took that impact was insane!

Anyhow - when I purchased the vehicle at Irvine Volvo, the customer service was so exceptionally AWFUL, it left a bad taste in my mouth. I am about to write a review for them after this.

When I went to San Diego Volvo, I left feeling like there was a sunshine cloud above that place shining angelic rays down. Are you kidding me? The customer service was unbelievable. They were quick, friendly, to the point, and even delivered the car 100 miles away a few days later because the bank was closed when I purchased it.

What a drastic difference from Irvine Volvo. I will return to San Diego for every vehicle purchase.

Thank you!!!!

Felicia H. | 2013-10-18

Of course, doing service repairs here would be a bit pricey. So I did opt out of that. I just requested an oil change for my 60,000 mile s40. Dennis was extremely professional, incredibly helpful, and just an overall enjoyable individual. Promote him please!

Jim B. | 2013-10-10

I bought my car three years ago at San Diego Volvo and I have had a great experience with their dealership ever since.  Their service department has been knowledgeable, friendly and fair in all of our dealings. I have been brining my car to their service although my warranty has long ago expired.

Ann A. | 2013-09-19

OC volvo shopping?  ........... skip it and head 1 hour south to SD VOLVO - You will not be disappointed.

We had arranged to purchase a new volvo from one of those independant sales guys BECAUSE the ORANGE COUNTY Volvo dealers (OC Volvo and (formerly) Power Volvo in Irvine) are nothing but CORPORATE DRONES.  You get better service from a vending machine.

I had checked everywhere for a specific red volvo with no luck, decided to settle on a black one.  The day before we were to get the black one, San Diego Volvo called, they not only had just received a RED car but quoted me a unbelievable price over the phone for a loaded volvo.....  we thought it was like with the other dealers, that it was a sucker quote, the bait n switch,  never to be realized amazing deal. But for some reason we bit, put the black on hold and drove down to SD Volvo the very next day.

Amazing, they had the car we wanted, in red, and they were rock solid on the deal they quoted over the phone - we had pre- arranged payment via our credit union so we were out of there with our new car in less than ONE HOUR.

It pays to do business when the human owner of the dealership is ON SITE.

So where do i get my car serviced you might ask, Chets Service is the only place in OC/Costa Mesa to go - they do all periodic maintenence, they are amazing, like the old style garages where you get a straight answer and a square deal.

We do take it to SD Volvo for the few warranty things that have come up.

Brent M. | 2013-09-01

My wife bought a used Volvo from them. Brought the car in three times because of ac issues during the warranty period. Each time they assured me the problem was fixed but a few weeks later the ac would fail again. Brought it in right before the warranty expired to have the ac checked out and they assured me that there were no leaks and the ac was functioning properly. Two weeks later the ac was out and my warranty expired. I was upset but brought it in to be fixed...$1600. Wow. Funny how they kept telling me they fixed it. Turned out they just kept refilling the freon or whatever it is and it kept leaking out. Magically once my warranty expired the leak was found!  What a joke. Other service nightmares included a terrible smell left in the car and tools left in the engine compartment that were rattling around as I got to speed on the freeway. If you are thinking of buying a volvo, don't do it. Buy a Honda or a Toyota instead. These guys do not stand behind their products or services.

Adriana A. | 2013-08-21

This Volvo Dealership will charge you for services that other Volvo dealerships will provide you free of cost.  For example, when I replaced the battery in my used Volvo, the radio asked that I enter in a code that I was not provided.  Another Volvo dealership in Escondido provided me with the number free of charge and with no hassle.  They were friendly, prompt, and service-oriented, exactly what THIS Volvo dealership is NOT.  Do not go to them.

James C. | 2013-08-04

I never thought that I would own a Volvo.  Costco had a special deal, so I started looking at Volvos.   I test drove a C30 and really liked it, but the dealer in Tucson didn't have any that weren't fully optioned.  Phoenix and LA were no help, but SD Volvo had what I wanted.  The car was offered at 2K off of the MSRP, minus $750 because it was a 2013 model and, of course, I got a $500 Costco card.  Gene arranged for the car to be shipped to Tucson for just $350.  Since I bought it in CA, I saved $650 in local sales tax.  It's a little scary to buy a car sight unseen, but Gene and the rest of the staff at SD Volvo did a great job of assuaging my fears.  They made the process easy and, dare I say it, fun!  This is only the third time that I have bought a new car but that doesn't lessen the fact that was the by far the best transaction I have ever experienced with a new car dealership. So, like me, even if you don't live in San Diego you would do well to call Gene at SD Volvo.

Great experience from start to finish. We purchased a used Chevy off their lot. Had a bad experience with a Chevy dealer and then found their ad. They happened to have the exact car we wanted almost new with 12,000 miles. We were treated like royalty. No game playing like the other Chevy dealer. I would highly recommend buying a car from them. Very organized and efficient. They had great respect for our time and the process went very smoothly. I got a better deal to.

Exceptional service from the Service Department. Dennis Heath, in particular, deserves a raise. He's the reason I keep bringing my car there to be fixed, and is the reason I'd go back to buy a new one when it's time. His diplomacy, professionalism, and ability to explain things about my new, but used, 2002 Volvo to help me know what to look or listen for is exceptional, and an especially helpful talent in a service advisor. I look forward to taking my car there (and when have you ever looked forward to taking your car in to be fixed?).

miriam g. | 2013-07-07

I purchased my Volvo from this dealership two years ago and I have gotten all my service done there. The level of customer service is impeccable and the quality of service is amazing. They have always been honest and trustworthy in regards to the needs of my vehicle. I highly reccommend Volvo service department.

Jeanette D. | 2013-07-01

I've owned three previous Volvos. I switched when I was in the market for a hardtop convertible and Volvo didn't have one at the time. I've since driven an Infiniti G37, BMW 330ci, Mercedes SLK 350, and a Mini. When my lease was up I decided to come back to Volvo. I still had a few more months left on my Infiniti lease but Adrian and the GM made me a killer deal that I decided to get my Volvo ahead of schedule. Costco has this deal too that makes negotiating easy and gives us a $500 Costco gift card.

Everyone at this dealership is nice and focused on customer service. I highly recommend this dealership, and especially Adrian in sales.

Stephen M. | 2013-07-01

I brought my car in for service, and it was a great experience.  They were very professional, courteous, and went out of their way to take care of me.  We had an issue that was caused by another retailer, and they documented the problem clearly so we could file an insurance claim.

I read some negative reviews here about lack of cleanliness.  There was no such problem.  The place is very clean, and the waiting area is comfortable.  They provide free wi-fi, free coffee and pastries, and a television, which makes waiting comfortable.  Even the bathroom was clean.

I asked them to top off the power steering fluid and this did this at no charge for parts or labor.  Cost to rotate tires was $22, which is not unreasonable.

Kimberly W. | 2013-06-16

I really wish there was a nearer Volvo service center than this one... after this last experience am really going to have to try to find somewhere else.  For spending this amount on a car, you would expect the customer service to be better than what it is...  I took my car in for it's 30K mile service a few months ago and because they don't offer a loaner car, took the shuttle to work... no only did they forget to pick me up, because of traffic couldn't send anyone to get me.  Luckily I was able to get a ride with one of my employees... that was just part of it.

My last experience was this past week... I took it in because my check engine light was on.  The sitting area was uncomfortable and dirty, there were bugs in the dish in which the pastries were on, and the bathroom was dirty.  Because I was hoping it would only take a short time to fix my car I stayed and also noticed that the shuttle is now being discontinued.  I love my car... but if you want to keep/maintain a customer base, you need to improve the customer service/department.

Spam D. | 2013-06-15

I am a loyal Volvo owner. I learned to drive on a Volvo and have since owned three Volvos. I have for the most part received excellent service through the service department but as I sit here in the waiting room I have to say that (1) their waiting room sucks -- it has mini blinds, no television, has three banana nut muffins only, 2) I listened to a schmo finance guy advise a service advisor on how to best sell their services to clients (shouldn't this be done behind closed doors and can't you let me wait without listening to your annoyingly loud voice), and (3) Paulette the receptionist has the personality of a toad and looks like she'd rather be watching paint dry in the Sahara.  She is rude on the phone and if she worked for me she would be fired.  While I love Volvo, if we are spending $$$ for our cars and $$$ for dealer services, please make our stay at your facility more pleasant.

Melissa I. | 2013-05-30

I had the most amazing experience at San Diego Volvo.  Let me preface this by saying I HATE buying cars.  mainly because I have had horrible experiences at other dealerships where I had huge arguments and fights to negotiate a price, trade-in and financing.  I was dreading going to buy a car but this was a walk in the park.

I owe most of this to Juan, who was the best salesman ever.  Ask for him the minute you arrive.  He mainly does used car sales but he helped me buy a new car.  He was so kind, knowledgeable and freindly.  Not pushy AT ALL.  IN fact, I almost had to force him to make me an offer.  He did things the right way.  First we talked price.  Then once that was set we talked about my trade in.  And lastly, financing, which we didn;t even have to negotiate because it was 0%.  he offered me additional discounts before I even asked.  I was so pleased dealing with him.

Overall, I am so happy with my car.  I got a good deal, had a good experience and left happy.

Lindsay C. | 2013-04-03

I bought my certified pre-owned S60 here and had a really nice experience.  Dealing with the service department front office has been difficult though.  The website is awkward.  Walking into the service department there is a woman at a desk who you'd think was there to receive customers (i.e. reception), but she never acknowledges you.  I've been told to sit in the lobby and someone would be with me only to hear 5 minutes later the reps at their desks wondering "what that [my] car is doing there?"  While sitting there I overheard that the "courtesy" shuttle left a guy behind at the dealership.  The cars might be well-oiled machines but the service department office not so much.  I've only gotten minimal service performed but the technicians seem to be good and your car gets washed which is cool.

Milan M. | 2013-03-17

Volvo was not my first choice, but it was among my top 3. Working with Richard H. changed all that. He's friendly, patient, professional and a straight shooter. He took the time to answer all my questions, never pressured me, and in conjunction with Ralph S. (sales manager) offered me a great deal on a 2013 S60. The financing was quick and easy, and they beat credit-union rates by a quarter point - here Edgar M. was the guy in charge, he explained every number. When I took delivery of the car they had it ready and shiny. They all took the time to explain the car and helped me configured some of the features. These guys were so great that we brought them a pie, and sent a letter to the owner with our heartfelt appreciation. Last but not least, the car is awesome!

joe j. | 2013-02-17

Sometimes you might as well get original Volvo parts! Service is ok. Sometimes you have to wait before someone gets to you. Kinda hit and miss. LoL

Gracie L. | 2013-01-29

The waiting area here is amazing! Homemade muffins and hot tea/coffee! And there's a TV and last time I got a hold of the remote and got to watch House Hunters while my Volvo was serviced. Nice!

Rufus B. | 2013-01-23

Ask for Dennis Heath as your service advisor.  I only work with him (for the past 4 years),  and I  think he is excellent.  I will only make a service appointment when I know he is working.  Kudos to Dennis!

Aurora Z. | 2013-01-11

I gave this place three starts because the first time it was a really bad experience. The next time it was a really great experience but I think it was due to the feedback I gave them on a previous survey. So for that they get an A-OK. They are taking their customer service seriously and that is huge.
I would go back now due to the last positive experience.

Jason L. | 2012-12-27

If you do not want to be pressured by a car salesman to purchase a car, go to San Diego Volvo.

A wonderful experience, very informative salesmen and very patient.

I happily bought a Volvo from here and they went above and beyond any of my expectations.

The staff here is very friendly, highly recommended dealership to do bussiness with.

Nikki J. | 2012-09-15

YAY!  I just bought a car from San Diego Volvo (tonight) and am so pleased with car, and the service!  Bill O. Was my salesman.  He was patient, not pushy, and not used-car-salesman-shady.  I LOVED him!  Mary in finance was great too.  An all around good experience.  Thanks Bill and Mary!

Claudia L. | 2012-09-05

San Diego Volvo has great pricing, good incentives and rock stars helping you sort through the whole car buying process! So why are they getting a 4 and not a 5? The waiting. It took hours for me to get out of there, had it not been for that I would be giving them a 5.Despite that I would still highly recommend them. You are pretty much waiting anywhere you purchase a vehicle, at least San Diego Volvo exceeds expectations in terms of inventory, pricing and knowledgeable staff. I just got an XC60 from Grant and couldn't be happier with the sweet deal I drove away with.

Bianca J. | 2012-08-21

FINALLY I met the one!!!

The one car salesman I can bring home to Mamí... I mean really? Pinch me am I dreaming? I never had an experience quite like this one!

All I'm saying is Bill Ohlson had me at hello. (& I'm NOT EASY!) I viewed the car I was searching for on their website, received a call within 10 min., expressed my concerns, exchanged words for about oh lets see maybe 15 min. and the next morning I was at San Diego Volvo (SDV) picking up my new silver stunna!

What you can expect from SDV:

1. Efficient service
2. Honesty
3. Competitive & fair pricing
4. Abundant stock
5. Up-to-date website
6. NO BATE & SWITCH!
7. Respectful & knowledgeable staff

What's wrong with these people?!!! I mean every staff member was seriously nice & UBER happy! From Bill to the finance department & the manager thank you, it was a pleasure. Your positive energy brought total harmony to me.

NEVER GET SERVICE HERE! Had two bad experiences with Warranty work. My Volvo has a Volvo specific leather color called Nordkap in it. i had a seat replaced under warranty and they had the seat recovered for me with "new leather". This "leather" is sticky, thin and not a color match at all to the Nordkap! Going back this week to ask them to stop outsourcing the upholstery jobs and please order my leather from the factory. Was also told Volvo would pay for my rental and they charged my credit card at $28/day for 3 days. Awesome. Also sat at the dealership for 6 hours with my 4 month old baby because I was told I would get to speak with the VCNA rep. Never was told when he got there even though I checked in with my adviser hourly. Got to the 6th hour and she says he came and left already and my car needs to stay a few days. greaaaatttt. My other experience ended with a huge scratch on my door and a faulty part put in. (had to return TWICE to have a new part put in each time). I don't care if I have to drive to LA next time, I will NOT be having service done at San Diego Volvo AGAIN!

R C. | 2012-07-03

I bought my Volvo from San Diego Volvo late last year and was just getting ready to check it in for it's first service when I read the Yelp reviews. Yikes! Not only was I scared but I was very concerned. Happily I was taken care of by Pam and I can report nothing but good things. I booked my appointment online, got a call the day before to verify I was honoring the appointment and dropped it off without any issues. Pam said it would be complete only 2 hours later, (I admit I scoffed at her), but she called a little over two hours later. Amazing! I had a great car buying experience here and that was backed up by a great service experience.

If a genie gave me a magic lamp I would be tempted to wish there was another volvo dealer in San Diego!  I love the cars but the service here sucks!
I informed them i wanted to drive the car across country and asked them to check it out to make sure it would make the trip, and fix the sunroof that was sticking; I also got an oil change.  They called to tell me they upgraded my program, and tought that would fix the sunroof?  At the end of the work day they forgot me with their shuttle and when I called they told me that they had stopped shuttling already.
When I finely made it back to the dealer they told me I need a new radiator.  I have no idea why they couldn't call about that; I was leaving on my trip in two days!  I had to leave that car.  The day before the trip I picked it up, drove it home and started packing it with stuff.   I don't know what made me do it but I decided to check the oil.  It was filled...  about three inches above the high mark.  I had to crawl under the car and let some oil out.
Next morning I was happily driving through the desert with the sun roof open, I was getting a little burned so I decided to close it.  It did not close!  I called San Diego Volvo they had me go through a bunch of steps like unlocking and locking the doors a series of times, claiming that would reset the computer.  I finely drove to the Volvo dealer in Vegas who after talking to San Diego Volvo to find out what was the problem was happy to charge me to close the sunroof.
I made it as far as Wisconsin when I noticed there was something odd about the way the hood was closing.  I realized that they had not replaced all the clips holding the front of the car together when they replaced the radiator.
Check the work!

This place is horrible. I've brought my car in several times the past year and they can't seem to fix it. They keep sucking not only my time but my money. The service department is not helpful and apparently don't know what they are doing. Every time I bring it in, I hear them say, well this rarely happens.  Like having an oil leak or a faulty check engine light is really a rarity? And when it comes down to it what does that mean? Can you fix it or not? They keep act like they are doing me a favor when I bring the car in.

I know my car isn't perfect (it is a 2005), but I can't tell if its because I bought a lemon or if its this service department. All I know is from now on I am bringing my car to another mechanic.

This is related to the service/parts departments (not sales).
Have made many trips to SD Volvo over the years (have owned a few different Volvo's...so it's not like I've been there a lot for the same car...yet:)). With the exception of some less than ideal experiences many years ago, the last few years have been great. In particular, Thinh and Sean in service are professional and have consistently gone above and beyond what I would expect from a dealer repair facility.  In the parts team - Damien is a rockstar. Super helpful and friendly and "owns" his job like few people I've seen and it's refreshing.

I just realized I never wrote an update on our car saga with them last year. Long story short, we had engine issues, they dropped the engine to diagnose it (without telling us) and then they expected us to foot the bill for it.

When it came time to figure out who was liable for the repairs they decided it wasn't a warranty issue when it clearly was. We went back and forth with them on this. Meanwhile, they kept our car FOR A MONTH and didn't even have the sense to offer us a courtesy vehicle or anything.

A MONTH AT THE SHOP. "It'll be ready this week"... yeah, it took a month and after having to dig up receipts they realized they were not gonna win. We got our car back and everything was working tip top but something like that should never have happened.

Avoid their service department at all costs. The experience was horrible at best.

Over the years, I have owned eight Volvos automobiles, and currently own an XC 70 and an S80 T6. I have had my cars serviced for a number of years at SD Volvo, and have had nothing but "Top Notch" repair work, and been treated like a valued client.

My service writer (if the still call them that) is Ms. Pam Elliott. In my opinion, she is not only very knowledgeable, but is very customer service oriented, which is extremely important to me. I will say though that a very large part of why I use San Diego Volvo is Ms Elliott, because she makes that much of a difference over other Volvo dealership's service departments.

P.S. The 5 stars are for Ms. Elliott!

Just bought my Mazdaspeed 3 from these guys. My sales rep was Juan, he was amazing. Very professional and courteous. This was an extremely painless buying experience. I'm from Los Angeles, so we did all the price agreements over the internet. When I went to pick up the car and sign the paperwork, I was in and out within a few hours. No pushy sales or anything, AWESOME! I highly recommend this dealer if you're looking for a new or used car. You'll be very happy! Well worth the drive from LA! Oh, last thing, their financing department is great, got me a loan very easily. A+

I have owned 3 Volvos, I absolutely love the cars. The Service department is a different story. Sorry if this gets wordy and confusing, but if you follow along you will find that this service department is Shady at best...

April 18 - Tow the car to Volvo dealer, they call me to say it is the Starter Control Unit and that the repair will cost $600

April 19 - They call to tell me the SCU did not fix the problem, they need to replace the Central Electronic Module, fortunately its under warranty.
I ask the service tech, "how do we know the SCU ($600) even needed replacing?" His response "There was a reading in the CEM saying that it had failed and needed replacing, but after the replacement it still didn't start, that is why we think the CEM is also faulty.

April 20-24 Car still not ready, they cant figure out why.

April 25 - Car is finally ready, i go pick it up. Look at my invoice $600 as expected, however there is one problem. When I look at the invoice notes they say:
-- April 18  CEM has no communication, replacing under warranty
-- April 19 CEM reads faulty SCU, replacing for $600

if you compare the notes, you will notice they reversed the sequence of events from what was done to the way it was billed.  why would a dealer do that? My only assumption is that they had to manipulate the invoice to justify having replaced the SCU in the first place.

When confronted about this, i was never given a reason why the invoice didn't match the actual events.  they wound up reducing my bill to just the cost of labor, and I walked out knowing I would never return again.

To make matters worse, this entire time i had to almost BEG them to get me a loaner car. I didn't want to rent because the service department wouldn't give me an estimate on how many days it would take to fix the car. Yet they refused to lend me a loaner until day 5 of the ordeal.

Service department: Its never a good sign when you take a car in for routine maintenance and they say "how long have you had the car ?".  Huh?  The model year is your first clue, Boy Wonder.   Why is it every time you take your car into this dealership they want to replace something expensive and suspect like all engine mounts and brushings?

In this weeks chapter, our service writer Frank bounced all over the map (like a golden retriever with a tennis ball) about what is wrong and needs to be fixed.  Finally had to bring him back to reality and start making a list of what was reputedly "wrong" with the car.  It was a long one, and highly suspect!!  Especially considering their (poor) history of diagnosing problems accurately.

Don't bother taking your car here for service, you ARE paying for the pastries, coffee and shuttle service, as well as an obscene mark up,  useless "preventative maintenance" and inadequate diagnostic skills.

I needed  a replacement key for an older Volvo.  This was not one of the new keys with a programmed chip in it, but an old-fashioned all-metal key that just needed to be cut from a simple metal blank.  They cut the key from the blank and gave it to me, along with a bill for $33.

Assuming any nose-picking locksmith would cut the same key for $5, San Diego Volvo seems to believe that their service is worth 6 1/2 times a reasonable rate. Please consider this the next time you think about taking your car to them for service.

I called Volvo of Carlsbad and they were so rude to me, so I decided to contact Volvo in San Diego.

Thinh was wonderful in the service department. Their operators were friendly. My passenger side mirror popped off and I just needed it popped back in. Instead, I scheduled a MAJOR routine service to be done. He was so friendly, and I'm ecstatic about the prices! I worked at a dealership for 4 years and I have to say their prices beat ours, for sure! If only Carlsbad would have been nicer they could have made a $230 sale instead of $5.

Finally! A good car buying experience. We worked with Edgar and he was a  true professional and pleasant to work with. He knows everything about the car that we asked and did not ever make us feel pressured at any time.

He was very straight forward about the price and at no time did he attempt to change our agreement. I even tried to visit other car dealers and their horrible sales people and questionable practices made me come back to Volvo to close the deal.

We wanted a particular color interior and exterior so we had to order the car. Our car took about three months to arrive but this was not Edgar's fault as he did give us an estimated date of arrival and the car arrived on time.

Even the financing worked out. Normally, I bring a credit union check ready so I never have to do financing through dealers but Volvo had a much better rate than my credit union. I did not feel cheated when it came to the financing and feel really good about the deal we received.

We have visited the service department for an exterior/interior enhancer treatment and they were very professional as well.

Nothing compares to the safety and practical features of a volvo! Edgar has even called to follow up and even spent time with us to answer questions about the car 's features after we bought the car. I have never felt so good about buying a car so we are thinking of getting another one soon!

Today was my first experience with San Diego Volvo. I had my car serviced there. My only other Volvo experience was with Escondido Volvo where I bought the car. Unlike dealing with the folks in Escondido, these people are great. The dealership is HUGE! A greet comes right out to your car to greet you and get you started. The dealership is very clean and modern.

I checked the car in and then walked to a local restaurant (Subway) and had breakfast. When I got back I hung out in the very nice waiting room. They supply gourmet coffees, pastries, reading material, and TV.

Once my car was complete I had to wait a little while because my car was in the car wash. Awesome! I can wait for that! Overall, a great experience.

**Review for the service department only**

Always around the estimate, the work is done quickly and their shuttle service is excellent.

Dropped off the car, the shuttle drove me to Fashion Valley, I watched a movie, they called me when they said they would and picked me up.

What else can you ask for?

Josh C. | 2010-12-03

I love my Volvo.

Biblically.  But don't tell my mom that, and I don't want those pictures getting out on the internet.

Anyway.

We've had some up and down service from Volvo the past year or so, but I think it's safe to say that they're really doing what they can to increase their customer service and product quality.

A while back I needed one of the turn signals changed and the dead bulb was left in the headlight casing.  Shoddy?  Sure, but look, accidents happen and in order to remove that bulb - which isn't doing any harm - the entire front headlight assembly would have to be removed and the labor cost on that is exorbitant.  So we dealt with it.  Weren't happy, but what can you do?  Lights aren't considered warranty items (which makes sense) and anything surrounding them is going to cost out of pocket.  I'm not forking out a crapload to have a rogue bulb removed from the bulkhead.

But, to be honest, the entire process turned me off to having to take the car back in to have some much-needed maintenance performed.

At the time of the bulb incident, the service tech told me that my steering wheel was loose - which it was, but not bad - and again, being that this is considered a non-warranty issue, I was going to have to pay out of pocket.  How much?  $150 or so.  Yipes!  So I held off.  A few months later, blam!  one of my Fog lights literally FELL OUT of the bottom of the car.  I'm turning a corner, I hear a noise like two tigers having their way with a trainer in a wine cellar, and I pull over to find the light casing just chilling there, smoking a cigarette, like it had done nothing wrong.  Super fail.

But, as fog lights aren't necessarily a much-used device in San Diego, I sat on that one as well.  No big deal.

But then, kooky things started happening with the electrical and I figure it's time to take the girl in to give her undercarriage a once over.  A nice wax and trim never hurt anyone.

So I give Pamela (who was awesome, by the way, even though she was sick,) the list of things and let her know that the steering wheel needs to be done for sure, due to safety reasons.  But if anything else is covered by warranty, do it.  Otherwise, let me know before they fix anything so I'll know what it's going to cost.

In literally two minutes, she told me that my estimate was going to be no more than $185.  Being that was in the general vicinity of the estimate I got from the last tech guy for the steering wheel, well, ok.  Let's do it.  She'll call me that afternoon when I can pick up the car and all is well.

2:00 rolls around and I get the prompt call from Pamela telling me my car was ready.  Word.  I pick up my wife and daughter and we're on the way.  I drop in, get the invoice and it's $135... for not only the steering wheel tightening, but the re-installation of the fog lights (the right side was out of whack too, it just didn't crap the bed like the other one.), AND after doing the electronic diagnostic, they found that filaments were burned out of my tail lights, so they replaced those too.

I was absolutely thrilled.

Sure, I paid $135 out of pocket, but they were necessities, and every single person in civilization knows that some things are covered under warranty, some aren't.  Look, I have no problem paying for things that need to be done, I just don't want to walk out of there with another orifice.  This time I didn't.

If I have a detractor, it's this:  getting different service quotes from different people is unfortunate.  Again, I understand that there are mitigating circumstances, but if you're not in front of the computer - like Previous Tech 1 - don't spout off numbers from your noggin 'cause that can most likely deter the customer from having their service done at the dealership.  Leave the quoting to the customer service reps.

That said, look people, you bought a Volvo for the quality, safety, service and support.  Yes, you may have to pay for that now and again, but be realistic.  As for me, I applaud Pamela for the spot-on service, the quote, and the fact that everything I needed done was done under budget.  Can't go wrong with that.

This experience erased the possible douchery of the previous, so we're back to square.

I love my Volvo.  I said that right?  Excuse me while I go give her a back rub.  Don't wait up.

This is the best dealership in San Diego.  Honest and trustworthy, staff is helpful and friendly, and the accomodations are unbelieveable!

Nick O. | 2010-03-23

Your typical dealership, better than most and not too painful.  The rep we worked with reminded me of Jason Statham too (even the accent)...so if you want to imagine buying a car from The Transporter, that helps haha.

Did our research before coming in, walked in and was greeted right away.  Did the usual chit chat and what we were looking for, etc and while the lot does not look like they have a lot of cars, they have their service area and garage right next door and there are more cars there.  So if you don't see anything you like, they could have it hidden in their garage.  If so, they'll just drive it down for you to check out.

The rep was pretty knowledgable and gave some trivia facts about the car that even I did not know, so that's a good sign.  Wasn't pushy to sell the car.  During the finance dance they were getting a bit tougher to work with, still not pushy, but more like "how can I make this cheap deal work for you without going broke frustration" haha.  Overall experience buying here was good.  You do get a lot of snail mail spam from the dealer which I don't appreciate though.  From your rep, to the service rep, to the manager, all thanking you one too many times.

Never really used the service here but one thing I did remember was that the rental cars were not on site and they had to drive you to get a rental car (odd). Not sure if this is still the case but you make want to ask about that before hand.

First, I found a great car Volvo C30 with Safe and Sound program from Volvo website. I then requested a quote. Peter Chong from San Diego Volvo emailed me about it and we were talking for about three weeks. I explained that I have a Honda Accord 2007 ($12K balance) for trade in. Also, I came by to drive test drive; this was on January 24, 2010. I was with my mom, Anita Serrano, as a co-signer just in case. We filled out an application where my mom would be a co-signer. The first offer has $3500 down, $12K trade in value (rather than blue book $14K), 5 yr term, about $600+ monthly. I said no. The second offer $2000 down, everything same. Then finally, no down, 5 yr term, with about 6.2 apr, less than $600 per month. We said yes but given my mom would only be on application as if she was purchasing it. But then they know that I would drive the car as it was originally for me. With my mom's about 750 credit score, we thought that the deal was a deal; we took the car that day. Jenny from Financing, however, called us to increase apr to 6.7 or $9 more payment on 29th, due to insufficient income. We agreed; so my mom had to re-sign a contract on, I think Feb 1st. Then, Jenny called to recall a car a couple of days after. We returned the car Feb. 5th; however, Jenny was unapologetic, indifferent, unsympathetic, and has no customer service whatsoever.

Me and my mom drove over (with my original car Honda) next two blocks to BMW of San Diego on the same day Feb. 5th. We gave them same info. My mom had to apply or has to purchase the car. With the same income we provided them. At about $6000 more on financing (at 2.9 apr), I'm able to purchase a bigger car with "above and beyond" and efficient CSR from sales all the way up to financing. Even the receptionist was friendly.

I don't understand why we could not receive the same excellence. I had to call in sick and also my mom had to take off work just so we can accommodate bad service, disorganized company, with questionable business practice at San Diego Volvo? This is unacceptable to us.

I consistently receive "legendary customer service" in the service department. The techs are knowledgeable, friendly and attentive.
The Management team should have their work ethic and customer approach used by every dealership in America. They are visible, they are professional, they are approachable, they are on top of their game as it relates to customer interface and they go to the ultimate effort to satisfy the customer.

This dealership has the best price on Volvos. I was shopping for an S40 for 2 months and couldn't find a better price. I walked on the lot, was greeted by Wayne. He was so nice and very helpful. Not pushy or annoying at all. It was the easiest car buying experience I have ever had! I would definitely recommend this dealership to buy a new car. Not sure about the service department...I will let you know once I get my car serviced!

I don't know who wrote these other reviews, but they must be employees and/or family members.

My family has been a Volvo family for the past twenty years.  Generally visiting other Volvo dealerships has been a breeze.   Great customer service, personality, and efficiency.

I don't know what happened at the SD Vovlo in SD, but it's officially put the 3 strikes and your out concept in effect.  I've come here 3 times for routine service over the past 2+ years and each time they
1) do the req'd service...which is nice (and expected)
2) always find some other way to nickel and dime (or more like benjamin) the hell out of me
3) I leave with some other issue (aka light on or unable to operate the vehicle).

When I call back they always have some shady answer as to why it's a coincidence that it happened right after leaving them (two of the three times the light went on as I was driving off their lot!!!  Unreal.

This last time, my car is not drivable.  When I confronted them, they simply added some additional work for hundreds of more dollars.  So, rather than give these jerks more business, I called a tow truck to get it towed to a local shop near my home.  Theis local shop knocked out my problem for a little over a grand, when Volvo SD was quoting me $1200 PLUS an extra $2500 in work they "found."  SUPER SHADY.

To top things off, I think their salespeople and shop are working in cahoots with eachother to scam people in to selling their car for WAY under market value.  They quote a boatload more work than needs to be done and then a "tech" coincidently is looking to buy and presents a super low ball offer.  In this particular case,  my car's Kelly Blue Book value is around $3500.  They quoted me $3500 in service.  So, they know my thinking is why would I spend the same amount of money on the car that's it's valued at, right?  So, one of their techs swoops in and offers to buy the car for $2000.  When I arrive he all of a sudden drops his offer to $1500.  This is the point where I drive it away, have it essentially break down on me, and then have it towed back to a local shop.

I ended up spending $1029 to get my car back in perfect running condition.  And if I wanted to sell it, I could probably get at least $3500 for it.

I do NOT recommend this place.  Unless, of course, you're made of money and get kicks out of being severely ripped off.

I stil can't believe all these other reviews.  Blows my mind.  Again, prob just employees or family members...cause there aint' no way in hell this place gets 3 stars, let alone all these 4 and 5 stars.

Rafael J. | 2009-08-23

This dealership is top notch! My 2003 Volvo XC90 had the transmission go out after the warranty had run out. The Service Manager got it replaced for me at no cost. They went out of their way to make sure I was taken care of. I have 2 Volvos and this is the dealership I will continue to take my cars to. When I am ready to trade in, this is where I will go as well.

Brian P. | 2009-05-21

This review is for the parts department.  I was doing some work on an '82 Volvo 244.  The parts guys were very helpful and friendly.  A lot of parts department guys can not be bothered when you are working on anything over 10 years old or if you are not buying floor mats or other accessories.  Good job guys!

I have to say, I am surprised that anyone can say anything nice about this Volvo dealership. Though maybe it's just the Pre Owned section that sucks.
I've been there twice, and sadly both times, Wayne came out to "help" me. The first time, he came up to me, said hi, and then went after another client. When he finally did come back to me, he was condesending and dismissive. When I told him what I wanted, he rolled his eyes and made an exasperated noise. When I told him I owed money on my trade, he told me it wasn't going to be possible to get me into a car. Still, he gave me his card, took my number and offered to call me if a car came in that I might be interested in.
So the second time I went there, I thought things might be different. Unfortunately I was wrong. Wayne was there again, and since I was the only customer there he hovered, but didn't offer anything constructive. When I asked about Volvos and their maintenance, he was very vague but did inform me that at about 150,000 they needed some "serious maintenance". When I asked what he meant by "serious", he said, "well, oil changes and things like that." Um, I think that's basic maintenance, right? So, when I told him I owed $3,500 on my trade he rolled his eyes, and made that noise again. I said thank you and walked off, but he followed me and tried to talk to me, but I wanted nothing to do with him. But I did go back into the office to see if there was anyone else to talk to, but no, just Wayne. I asked if there was another Volvo dealer in the area but the nearest on is 30 miles away. So when I told him that I wanted to buy a car but he was no help, he said, "did you say you owed $3,500 more than the trade was worth?" which upset me even more because then I knew he wasn't listening to me at all. And he kept saying that he thought I owed more than the trade was worth, so I told him that I would not do any business with San Diego Volvo he had nothing to say, and I left. This dealership does not know the meaning of customer service and I will not recommend them to anyone.

For maintenance and repairs on my S60 I normally go to Hugos in Encinitas, but if I need to consult a dealership, I go to SD Volvo. Hands down the best dealership in the county. Granted, after experiencing how sucky Carlsbad Volvo is, I would have been happy with just about anything, but I am thoroughly impressed. Their sales department is nice and cooperative and the service department is helpful and courteous. I was a little surprised by how nice the waiting area was... I'm not used to luxury car dealerships (I come from a family of Toyota drivers). For being such a busy dealership, it was impressive how well organized the cars are on the lots. If only they weren't so far away... but it's totally worth it if it means avoiding Carlsbad Volvo.

I'm cruising along in my little Nissan around downtown San Diego bumpin' the latest Aloe Blacc music in my ride and feelin' good. I drive upon a few fine females and im waving hello. They give me the "nuh-uh you ain't all dat w/ dat lil' ass Neee-Sahn!!" But im so into the music and doin a modified version of the Harlem Shake and shakin my head in a bobble head hip hop type of way that they can't help but laugh and smile... then I had them hop in my ride and treated em to Pinkberry and persuaded them to vote for Obama all the while trying to fight off my fans asking for autographs and marriage proposals from porn star lookin girls.

If it wasn't for my smooth style and natural knack for being so fresh in a Ric Flair type of way, I wouldn't have had the chance to become these ladies babies daddy.

So to make things easier on my I purchased a Volvo ... these cars are on some other ish!!

Everything about SD Volvo is great. They take care of you, make sure you're set up ahead of time, greet you at your car, get you set up w/ your service specialist, have pastries, coffee & bottled water, a clean lobby, more youthful presence and not your typical car dealer type of image people, go over every detail about your service w/ you, make sure you have a seat on the shuttle, prompt service allover, and call you for a follow up later in the week to make sure your car is performing correctly.

I've dealt w/ Acura dealers, Nissan dealers.... other Volvo dealers...

But this place takes it... they make it worth owning a Volvo.

Now I can roll up on ladies on the corner of 5th and Market and bump my soul music, wave hello.. and only get into the first 2 seconds of my Harlem Shake before they jump shotty and demand to go for a ride to the Children's Museum because they wanna show me where to go..... a few years after I have their kids....awww snapppp... thanks San Diego Volvo!

This place was great... I bought an S40 from them and enjoyed the experience (and car) so much, my sister went and bought a car from them the next day.

Sadly, they do not give quantity discounts on cars - but it really was a good experience.

VOLVO means -

"Very Odd Looking Vehicular Object" (or at least the old school rides are.)

Anyway...
The dealer mechanics are overpriced!!!!!
But I still think Volvos are a bitchin' ride (+1 star).
