Reviews on Carz

Bought my truck at carz. The staff was great and provided exceptional service. I highly recommend you make a visit if your looking for a used vehicle.

My experience with CARZ has been great. My car passed away suddenly and I needed a new vehicle pretty quick. Bill was very helpful as well as Mark. They showed me some cars and I set my sights on a Toyota Corolla. The transaction was easy and car is running great. I took it to my mechanic the very next day and he said everything looks great aside from replacing a few bulbs and fuses.

All the Yelp reviews are cause for concern but this place was referred to me by my roommate Deb. She has bought 2 cars from them to support her catering business and swore by them. Needless to say I was not disappointed at all.

Thank you guys for getting me back on the road again!

Nasty cars. Clean them before you try to sell them. I don't want to find french fries in between the seats from the previous owner on my test drive. it makes me wonder if the cars ever get inspected for mechanical or maintenance issues if they find it difficult even clean them.

Richard L. | 2015-01-23

When i first went there they tried to sell me a bad car.  When i wrote the post. They claimed i was someone else...Again. Trying to justify there bad service...The person he's describes was not me....Guess there's more then a few that is in happy...
Goes to show why Its in a crappy location with beat up cars.

I bought a 2002 PT Cruiser from this business back in 2010.  I never thought to do a yelp review on them, but my experience was horrible, so here goes...

First I was the idiot for not taking the car to a mechanic on the test drive.  I thought, "well I'm sure that lemon car stuff won't happen to me."  That being said,

I bought the car as is with the CARFAX showing no accidents from this place.  (Note:  I was very naive about buying cars at the time, as you will see in this review.)

So I bought the car and 3 months go by living large, one day I'm driving up the Coronado Bridge and I hear this whining noise and realize the acceleration is not working well.  Thank God I didn't not get stuck on the bridge like those poor souls I've seen.  So I get over and desperately try to make it to NAB and my engine starts overheating like crazy, the radiator burst.

I take it into the shop (towed from Coronado to PT Loma) and the guy comes out and says, "did you have this car when the accident happened?" and I said no, the carfax said no accident.  He then showed me the hood and paint job and how he could tell it was in a major collision and rebuilt shoddily.  He guessed that the collision was not reported and the car was repaired in Mexico.  So I get that radiator and other things fixed, then the transmission craps out a week later.

Moral of the story:  My $4,000.00 + tax 2004 PT cruiser needed $7,000.00 in repairs from a transmission shop.  Then I had to deploy to Japan and sold it to CARMAX for about 1,500.00 in 2012.  I know, I'm a genius right?

Don't trust these guys, take the car to a transmission shop (SCA comes to mind) and have it inspected.

with this being my first official review on yelp, its easy for me to say that the customer service and professionalism i experienced at Carz was more than i expected. Pat helped me from the beginning and not once felt like i was being pressured into doing anything i didnt want to do. he may not have known it, or maybe he did, but i was a first time buyer. he made the process smooth and easy the whole way through. after walking out with the keys i even came back to get my license plates just 3 days later. i had a great first time car buying experience at Carz and i can thank Pat and the rest of the team for that memory. thanks guys

I went to buy a corolla le from , the car looked nice, well painted, good mileage, and of course great price 160k for 4 grand. We thought we can probably finance but they don't finance to people out of town (came from the area of LA) I didn't mind about that much because we had most of the money so if making a deal it wouldn't be much of a problem.

So the guy told us that the other guy maybe manager (i forgot there names) that he stepped out and he'll call him to bring the car since they have a few selection in the lot. Also he was nice since he understood that we came a long way so called him right away kinda kept us waiting or else i don't think he would have called him. So we waited till he brought the car, since we drove 2 hours of course and went especially for that car, we checked it out here are the results:

1. LE means luxury, expect power locks and window...nope they were automatic.

2. As soon as the car arrived i was excited being my first car and came long way for it and waited inside...saw it total disaster. In the pics it looked well painted couple of sun damages, that you can barely see and wasn't much of a big deal and taken cared of, total opposite!!! The car was all scratched and really used up.

That threw me off, the body since they said it's non-negotiable so of course not a good deal. What threw my bf off was the interior being automatic and the door handle looked used and ready to fall off anytime. Still not done...

3. We wanted to look "interested" to take it for a test drive THE CAR DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO START!!! It was automatic. So he brought it to the lot but yet when i started it it didn't even want to start. So they did get our license information of course so we won't steal the car. They even tried to start it and no luck and they were going to call there mechanic. We were hungry so we left and they were about to close at 5 anyway. How embarrassing is that.

And that was our experience at that lot. The guy sounds very pushy and not wanting to negotiate and make sure you buy the car as is and also the price.
Didn't satisfy me, but they did have cheap cars and the ones that looked nice at the lot, but it all varies on the drive your willing to make and make sure it's worth it.

I bought my car back in May 2012 from these guys and am just now getting around to posting a review (best of intentions get waylaid by life). The first time I went to look for a car, I was surprised to find out that the car, which was listed "for sale" had already been sold, but Auto Trader's database wasn't updating. And admittedly, this was not my only shopping stop. Each used car consideration was met with considerable discussion with the family mechanic and he was putting the kibosh on all of my choices. So I became more diligent about what I was looking for in a used vehicle (decent gas mileage, affordable car insurance, easy to find parts (no special editions), not a lot of repair complaints, etc) and then I figured out the local car auctions so I would know when to hit the various car dealer databases.

So, when I found another car at Carz, I sent them an email to confirm they still had it. They did so I came out to test drive it. The car was within my price range and was exactly what I was looking for. It needed two new tires and one of the mirrors was dangling. Mark took care of all of that. I left a happy driver. It's more than two years later and the car is still running great. Had some wear and tear that required fixing, but I did purchase a 10 yo car with more than 100k miles on it. Oh yea, and my mechanic was happy with my car choice too and I haven't visited him in more than a year.

My sibling also purchased a car from them that she's been very happy with as well.

Thanks guys!

Update: Mark is also a liar. That, or his employees are.  When my husband called and tried to talk to Mark, he was told that Mark had already left for the day but that he would be back in the office the next day. Now, mark is sending me messages on Yelp telling me that he was out of town. This is highly unprofessional. If you're going to lie to your customers or have your employees lie for you, at least have the stories straight.

This establishment is full of nothing but lying crooks. Don't trust them and dont ever buy from them. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this establishment due to their total lack of professionalism and their blatant willingness to lie to their customers.

Nicollette C. | 2014-02-28

Do not ever trust this business. Completely corrupt and unprofessional. To keep a long story short- there were a lot of issues with my paperwork when I purchased my car. They were very difficult to get a hold of when I was trying to resolve the issue. The car I purchased needed over $700 of repairs just months after I bought it. I would not recommend this place and do not let the cheap prices lure you in.

Kate J. | 2014-02-15

I don't know why I see so many people on here giving a bad ratings and whining about this place? I have had nothing but great service and full respect from these guys! I have been there a number of times and had two friends buy great cars from them. They are honest and will tell you the truth if you just ask questions! It doesn't matter the cost of the car if you are stupid and don't know how to do your homework and JUST ASK the right questions to get the right car for you. They will always do what they can to take care of you to make you happy and I will always return to them to get my friends reliable cars for low prices.  And as far as the mechanic goes they use, he is just as honest and fair priced as they come!
If you go to a place with a shit attitude you will most likely get it back! So go there and treat them with respect and you will most definitely get it back! :)

I bought my car from mark and he was nice and helpful ..... My car runs grate and they have been there to help me with along the way . When i went to carz i had no time for B.S and i was outta there in about a hour a few weeks later i was having a minor problem with my car and they had it fixed the same day !!!  When you buy a used car you get what you pay for .. I an sure my next car will be coming from carz in the future ......

Esmeralda A. | 2013-09-27

I read the reviews, but thought I should give this place a shot. I went and looked at a 2005 Civic Ex priced at 5,990. I told him I wanted to get it checked by my mechanic. Mark says no problem, but anything my mechanic finds is up to me to repair, the price on the car is set, and I can decide whether to buy it or not.  My mechanic (Aiwa Auto Repair, who btw has tons of 5 star reviews) says that the passenger side axle is loose and could fall off the transmission any minute, needs to be fixed ASAP (quoted me $180 to fix). This was probably caused by the shoddy repair work Mark's mechanic does - he told me they had replaced the clutch recently. I came back and told Mark and he said they would fix it if I decided to buy the car and said they could fix it for $120. No thanks, I don't believe I could trust your mechanic...

The other problem with the car was that the ABS light was on, which Mark mentioned, but didn't explain exactly what was wrong. I figured my mechanic would tell me when I got the inspection done, but turns out that kind of diagnostic costs $80 and he didn't have an appointment avail to do it that day along with the regular inspection. I asked for a worst case scenario on what a repair would be and he said anywhere from $200-$800 depending on the issue. Mark scoffed when I told him that, but didn't provide an explanation as to what is actually wrong with the car since he hasn't bothered to get it diagnosed. His reply was 'we can't fix everything. Our cars are priced lower than blue book value and people that buy them understand they come with problems.' Still unwilling to negotiate on the price of the car.

So I guess if you're a mechanic or have a hook up somewhere for a mechanic, this place is for you. Buy a project car from Carz and get a deal? Who knows? Me, I prefer not to buy a car that I immediately have to put more money into for repairs...

Rob R. | 2013-08-28

Great and honest place of business.

I purchased an infinity 1998 for excellent price.  The car runs great. Mark, the owner and his staff were very helpful and courteous.  I purchased used cars before and had bad experiences but this one turned good.
I also purchased the warranty they offer to have more peace of mind but never needed it.
Since then, I called few times for advise on the car and visited the shop as well and always get help and excellent customer service.

My next car will be from them as well.  Prices are marked clearly and always below market for quality used cars. They really go the extra mile for their customers.

Joel W. | 2013-08-25

I never knew buying a used car could be this easy!
All the automobiles were priced really fair, and I had
a laid back shopping experience. At first I was looking
and then I found what I was looking for. Thanks Mark!
I will send all of my friends your way...

My review is actually based on the service we received. Long story short, I had one day to find a 'new' car and a friend of mine bought his truck from here so I thought we should take a look. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that these cars are not going to be perfect considering the prices but they weren't junkers either. We get to the lot and are looking around for a good 10 minutes before Patrick comes out and asks if we needed any help or if we were interested in anything specific. Told him we were just looking and he did walk with us a little bit, talking about my son, and commenting on a few cars we had pointed out. Never once did he try to push any sort of sale nor did he come off as intimidating or anything else remotely negative. I only gave this place a shot because of my friend, had I read these reviews, I wouldn't have stepped foot on the lot buuuuuut I had a pleasant experience and I think it's a place that you should check out to form your own opinion because the ones on here don't paint a clear/fair picture.

This is the second time my parents buy me a car from here, and I can't thank the employees at this dealership enough for treating my parents so well and giving us such great deals.

In 2009 I was t-boned at an intersection and totaled my car. As a result, I needed a car that was not too expensive. With the money the insurance gave us we decided to check this place out because their prices are pretty good. The first car my parents purchased for me at this dealership was an 02 Saturn SC1. It was a great little car and was very reliable. Unfortunately, a couple weeks ago I was involved in another accident and my car was totaled...

This time around when we got the check from the insurance we knew exactly where to go. Today my parents went down to the dealership and came home with a car for me. I got an 04 Hyundai Sonata V6. It is in great condition. Yes it has some paint chips near the door handles but that is to be expected from a car that is almost 10 years old. The interior of the car is in GREAT condition! I am so happy with my new car! It drives smoothly and is a big upgrade from the Saturn I had before. The price of the car was a little high for my family but once the salesman realized we were return customers he was able to bring down the price enough for my parents to purchase the vehicle.

I am very appreciative of the manner in which my parents were treated and can't thank the dealership enough for treating us so well. Thanks again CARZ!

If you buy a car from here, have a mechanic really give it a look over.  Even then, buyer beware.  I bought a '01 Nissan Altima there about a year ago. I should have known something was up when multiple people came in complaining about their cars breaking down in the hour I was there doing paperwork.  I was sold on the fact that It only had 60k miles on it as well as the 6 month "warranty".  Within a month, the alternator went out.  The "warranty" did not cover the alternator.  A couple of months ago the car started to have a weird smell. When I got it checked out, I learned the head gasket was blown.  It had some other minor problems that developed as well but I cut my losses.  Major problems with a car that has only "60k" miles on it.  Hate to see what problems a car with 100k would have.  Do your research and go with a reputable dealer.  You get what you pay for I didn't even get that.  Lesson learned.

I had been searching at some of the vehicles that they had on their websites. I had a check from progressive with a certain amount and not at all willing to go up from there. I had an idea to look at a couple of the cars because the pricing seemed to be erratic and did not make sense. For example, it would have a newer car with low mileage at a low rate and then an older car that did not look nicer than the new car but had a higher price. Intrigued, we decided to call and make sure they were open before we called. The guy who answered sounded like he was rearing to go and was going to be salivating with his tongue hanging out in anticipation for a customer. Despite the enthusiasm to sell us a car we went down there. The mirage was lifted when you can totally see the damage on every single car. It's not comfortable to see a vehicle with problems that are completely fixable and the only answer as to why it's in that condition is "Well, it's old." Immediately he wanted to know our price range. Instead of asking what I'm looking for all he cared about was price. I told him what my limit was and he immediately raised it to 500 dollars more. He had no intention of coming down off any price of the car even if the paint was bad, air conditioning did not work, slashes or completely demolished interior, rusted brakes, missing buttons. He even said I could finance $200 dollars to come up to his price instead of extending that difference to me and making a sell. Thank God we told him we had other vehicles to look at. We left and I can't see any reason why we would ever go back or refer anyone to go there. We went to the mile of Cars and spoke to a respectful, honest used car dealer who had a 1995, 155,000 mile Toyota Camry that was clean, no rips, leather interior, newly painted, and the guy came down to get me out the door at the price I wanted. That is a deal. There is no reason to settle for "Well, it looks like crap but it's old, what do you expect." I'd rather hear "Well she's old but, she looks great, nothings wrong, and we'll work with you." Those people sell cars not salivating douches. Thanks for making sure we left your place!

I bought a 2002 VW Cabrio from Mark and it has been a good car so far. I had problems with the throttle response and they took care of it for me and gave me a loaner car for a few days. The nice thing is they do gaurantee every vehicle  and standby what they sell. They also gave me a ride back home when i bought the car. I did notice some negative reviews, i guess there is no pleasing some people.

Alex D. | 2010-06-09

Mark is a world class person. I bought a 99 Ford Ranger from him, and he worked with just like before. This is the second automobile I perchased form Mark and Jason, because their both very polite and not pushy. And you find too many honest car sales person out there, but if you are try Carz on Midway.

Angelica R. | 2010-04-24

I won't tell you whether or not you should go there. I'll just tell you about my experience.

I bought an older Saturn from Carz, paid $2500 out the door. Obviously I'm not expecting this car to be the most perfect vessel ever owned by man, I'm realistic, so I knew I'd probably have to get things fixed here and there.

When I purchased the car from Mark, that seems to be the only day that he was ever in the shop. Number one, he told me they had just replaced and put in a new radiator. It came as a surprise to me when 2 weeks later the low water alert kept coming up on the dash, what with this "new" radiator in the car. My thinking is if they just got it fixed, then it should still be under warranty, why should I pay for it when they can get it for free? So I call up the dealer and speak to Jason, Mark's partner who might as well be the only one that works there since Mark is apparently never in.

After 4 calls to Jason over the next 2 weeks, who claims to always let Mark know when someone calls for him, I FINALLY reach Mark. Not only by this time am I upset about the radiator I keep having to fill with water, I'm pissed because I also haven't received any DMV paperwork for a car I've owned for over a month. After much delay I finally get the radiator problem settled (they use a shady place around the corner, no wonder it wasn't fixed right the first time) but still have NO tags (the current tags had been ripped off, and Mark charged me to replace them).

I purchased this car in January and as of today still have NOT received the tags I paid Mark to send me. The registration was due in March, and I already paid that (thankfully through the DMV and not Mark). What I don't like is that something I paid them for never got to me, and now I can't even use it. All my calls to Mark go un-returned, and Jason, who supposedly lets Mark know every time I call, is VERY rude.

As I said, I'll let you draw your own conclusions about whether or not to buy from these guys. But speaking as someone who actually BOUGHT a car from them and not just looked at one, I think you can gather the more credible review from the 2 that are on this site.

UPDATE 11/7/2011: I don't appreciate the comment Mark left on the review. (which has now been changed 1/10/12) Regardless of the fact you cheated me out of the measly $20 I paid for replacement tags and you refused to give it back to me. I've worked for a car dealership and dmv processes registration INSTANTLY. Yes, please read the filtered reviews because they are all fake and probably from Mark and Jason themselves. I honestly didn't even think you guys were that shady but this is just ridiculous now.

UPDATE 11/19/11: After receiving a private message from Mark, let me rephrase that I "suspect" the the filtered reviews are fake. I do not know this for a fact. What I do know is that the majority of their positive reviews have been filtered, and that all those reviewers don't have pictures and have like 2 reviews at most. I'm sure the masses are capable of forming their own conclusions. You all can look at the filtered reviews for yourself.

Mark Haddaway runs an honest shop.  I visited him to look at an older Mercedes.  Mark's transparent approach, devoid of high-pressure sales tactics, made the experience delightful.
